Oneshot- Stuck With Green

The night sky shrouded the city in peaceful darkness; not a sound could be heard for miles. A beautiful full moon shone down on the empty streets, casting an eerie shadow on buildings for miles. With barely a cloud in the sky, stars shimmered openly to the world below, creating the serene atmosphere that followed slumber.

That is, until a disturbing tone repeatedly beeped, causing the sleeping teen to bolt and hit the device in aggravation. A mumbled groan was heard through the pillow. He had just managed to fall asleep a few hours before, due to a certain persistent hunting ghost.

"Why do I do this to myself?" Danny muttered to himself, slowly pulling off the covers and stretching his muscles. Winter was his least favorite season; every morning when he woke up for school it would be pitch black outside. With barely four hours of sleep and a comforting darkness outside, what was to stop him from falling back asleep?

His sister.

Jazz knew all the tricks to scare him out of bed, and each one usually ended up horrible for him. So, he became accustomed to getting out of bed himself, without the unpleasant side effects of his sister doing it for him. Little did he know, that was the exact plan she had for him from the beginning.

Danny stepped quietly to the lamp next to his dresser, pulling the chain as light flooded the room. He blinked in discomfort, his irises expanding to make the burning lessen. He began to rummage through his dresser, trying to find something simple and heavy to keep himself warm, even though he didn't need it. Danny's ice powers were very convenient in the winter, they made him immune to the cold. However, he would wear jackets to keep up appearances. There was no need to create more suspicion when he could prevent it.

After slipping on his regular blue jeans, Danny's eyes spotted his favorite black sweatshirt. It was the most comfortable piece of clothing he owned, and matched everything he wore. The halfa stood and pulled it over a grey shirt, and trudged to the bathroom to make sure he looked somewhat presentable. He stuck his head through the doorframe and looked in the mirror, messed with his black hair with his hands, and stepped to leave the room.

Only to stop after three steps, letting his mind catch up with events.

Danny dashed back to the mirror in panic, chest heaving as his heart threatened to burst out of his chest. He frantically grabbed areas on his body, attempting to prove to himself he was not in ghost form.

So why were his eyes glowing green?

He stepped back in confusion, grabbing his head in his hands. How can he make them change back? An idea came to mind, so he stepped back, giving himself some room. White rings flashed at his waist, traveling up and down his body to turn to his ghost form. After seeing that his eyes were the glowing green they were meant to be in that form, he changed back to the human side, expecting his eyes to return to their blue shade.

However, his green eyes met themselves in the mirror and he grunted in frustration. His powers had experiencing a 'growth spirt' of sorts recently that caused slight glitching. This was probably a side effect, he pondered, and an annoying one at that.

Danny's thoughts were interrupted when his sister called from downstairs, "Danny! You're going to be late for school!"

School.

"Oh no," Danny grimaced. There was no way he could go into school like this. He would be questioned or even recognized there, and he couldn't risk his secret like this. In his mind, ideas for excuses came in a wave. He could tell them he wore colored contacts. He could tell his parents he felt sick and stayed home. He could keep his hood down all day and hope Lancer didn't tell him to pull it down. Or…

Another idea came to mind, and he thought it to be the most logical of them all. Danny ran back to his room, grabbed his prop, and bounded to the kitchen. Deciding to skip breakfast, the teen grabbed his backpack and rushed out the door.

"Dude, why are-"

"Don't ask, Tuck," Danny seethed at his best friend. They met at the halfa's locker in the morning waiting for Sam, who usually arrived last. The last thing he wanted was attention, but it appears people were already staring and pointing him.

"It's the middle of winter, dude. Why are you wearing sunglasses?" Tucker hesitated, pushing his own glasses to the bridge of his nose. He glanced at the people passing by and whispering, noticing that people were questioning it just was much as he was.

Danny grimaced. He didn't like telling his friends about his glitches. They have enough problems, he doesn't want to burden them with his own. "I'm fine, Tucker. Don't worry about it." He opened his locker and shoved his bookbag inside, making it look like he was occupied.

Tucker, still curious, made the decision to reach over and rip the sunglasses off the halfa's face, letting them clatter to the floor. Danny stared wide-eyed at his friend, and Tucker did the same. After a few moments, the green eyed teen glared at Tucker, clearly irritated of his actions.

"Not cool, Tuck," He snarled, bending over to reach his sunglasses. Dusting them off with his sleeve, he looked up at his friend for a response. Danny was surprised to see him in a still position wearing a perplexed look on his face. He was about to ask what was wrong, but was interrupted by a familiar female voice calling them.

"Hey guys, sorry I'm late. I had to help-" Sam hesitated, looking at Danny's eyes in confusion. Many emotions clouded over her face before settling on a perturbed one. "Uh, Danny what's with the eyes?"

Her friend sighed in irritation. There was no getting out of this now, no matter how he tried to avoid them all day. They were extremely persistent, and he knew that first hand. Deciding on telling them, he placed the sunglasses back on and put on a strong face. "I may be experiencing a small side effect from my power core growing. It's no big deal, really, I just can't change my eyes back yet."

His friends exchanged glances before grinning and laughing in short puffs, trying not to laugh to his face. Danny gave them an accusing look, "What's so funny?"

They burst out in laughter, unable to help themselves. A slight blush rose on his face, embarrassed at the attention they were gathering. He sighed in irritation and grabbed the books for English, trying to avoid the two laughing at his eyes.

Sam, the first to calm down, tried to talk to him. "No, no, we're not laughing at you, it's just-" She hesitated, "The glasses, they look ridiculous on you." She strode towards him and reached up to slide the sunglasses off Danny's face, analyzing his features with green eyes. "I think your human half looks cool with green eyes."

The boy in front of her let his features slide into a smirk. Those two never failed to make him happy when they could tell he was upset. "Fine," he chuckled, "I might look like an idiot, but i have to keep them on." He gently took the glasses out of her hands and placed them back on his face. Taking a few steps forward, Danny glanced back his two friends and called, "Besides, I look cool with anything."

Sam and Tucker chuckled and followed him, leaving a positive atmosphere in the air. Today was going to be hilarious.

Tada! Hope you enjoyed. I'll have another chapter for Void posted in a week or two. Please, feel free to leave feedback.
