When Tadashi Hamada begins his project of Baymax, he soon realises that he knows nearly nothing of healthcare. Robert Callaghan gets him in contact with a knowledgeable doctor who likes helping people too. Carlisle Cullen. No pairings/Mostly canon.
I don't own Big hero 6 or Twilight or anything entailed to such things, everything belongs to the respective owners. I only own my writing. I made some of the names up based on the [voice-actors] on wiki, but I suppose I can't claim those either.
The Project Without A Doctor.
Tadashi Hamada wanted to slam his head on his desk. Violently, brutal and hard. As many times as the amount of numbers Hiro knew of Pie. Which was somewhere between seventy and eighty, he recalled. His project that seemed to go along so nice and well, his dream-robot that could help so many people might just not be possible because he was so stupid, so arrogant, so foolish to think that he hadn't overlooked such an important thing. The whole essence of the project, and he managed to forget he knew nothing about it!
"Stupid-"
-BAM-
"-Empty-"
-BAM-
"-Brain!"
"Trying out new brainstorming techniques, mister Hamada?" a calm voice behind him resounded, slightly amused by the antics on display.
"Professor Callaghan! Eh, no sir, it's just- I'm a bit… stuck." He responded sheepishly that the Robert Callaghan saw his attempt to split smash his desk with his head.
"Oh, how stuck?"
"Well, I've already coded a large amount of code for the AI, and it is made so that it should be easy to implement new procedures, new knowledge or such stuff. I've thought out designs, materials, joints, cameras, movements, sensor's… everything mechanical is not so much the problem. Sure, it's a lot of coding given it should have a lot of autonomy as an AI or VI, but that's not the problem. I've downloaded Terabytes of medical information but I cannot properly put that in, let alone turn it in practical use! There are lots of things that I cannot simply download and install! I can't get him beyond a database phase. I- I simply don't know how to get on with this."
"Mister Hamada, stop. Breathe. Collect your thoughts. Good? Now, I want you to tell me in a single sentence what the essence of your problem is." The calm voice of his professor ordered.
"Right. Well, sir. I- I guess I began the project to make a healthcare AI while forgetting that I don't know anything of health in the first place."
"So the robot isn't the problem. It's that you don't have a clue of what you should actually do to make it helpful."
Tadashi found his mumbled "Yes, sir" very, very, lame. The project could very well be scrapped now…
"Alright, you know the problem. What would the solution give you?"
"Wouldn't you want to ask how to solve it first?" He couldn't help to be a bit of smartass. He was related to Hiro after all – the emperor of smartasses.
"No Hamada. First the beginning and the end. Then you see how you create the middle part that will make the bridge between problem and solved possible. So, what would you need to end up with?"
"The knowledge and feedback to know which decisions and steps to take so the AI would serve its purpose best?"
"Hmmm. And how would you get that knowledge?"
"Finding the right internet database, find new ways to- "
"No Hamada. Sometimes you need to look at things in an easier way. Think. What are we doing now?"
"Um, talking sir?" Tadashi began to feel really stupid, as if he should have found an obvious solution long ago. This was just plain embarrassing. But his professor went on, apparently not so troubled.
"Exactly. And why are we talking?" he asked hopefully.
"Because… I was… smashing my head against the desk, sir?" Callaghan deflated a bit.
"… No- well, you're not wrong, it was a bit of a concern. A deformed forehead wouldn't help you in any way. But not my point. You already said it yourself earlier. Come one Hamada, it is so, so obvious. Don't think it is stupid, just say it!"
"Because I have a problem that you might know the solutions to?"
"YES! You have a problem, you try to ask someone! Technology is something wondrous mister Hamada, but it brings us so much that we forget we learn easiest by someone else's help." Tadashi inwardly facepalmed. The solution had been so moronically obvious but no, because it wasn't straight available on the net, he just had to go and be stuck for over a week and lose all that time stressing out over nothing.
"So, I should contact people from the medical sector?"
"And this is the point where I will leave you to your devices mister Hamada. You know what to do now." he said as he stood up from his creaking chair and walked towards the door.
"Oh, mister Tadashi?"
"yes professor?"
"If by the end of the week you haven't found the necessary solution, you will come to me and ask for my help. Wanting to accomplish things on your own is admirable, but if it hampers your progress, than it is more a case of pointless pride and being stubborn. Dare to look past your pride and dare to ask for help. Nearly all of your peers face such problems."
"I will professor."
"Hey Tadashi, how is your project coming along?"
"I'm a bit stuck with the healthcare feedback, Honey Lemon. I've mailed to nearly every specialist in the hospitals of San Fransokyo and even far beyond, but nearly no one is able to make time for the amount of feedback and input I need."
"Not a single specialist, doctor or nurse anywhere without currently anything to do? Kinda hard to believe." Wasabi asked disbelieving.
"A single one is by far not enough, Wasabi. I need nearly ALL of them. And nearly all of them require some kind of pay or compensation at least. Nobody works for free."
"Well, we've got our project budgets-"
"-Not enough. I'll need that for the robot itself, materials, chemicals and all the rest."
"Ah well, you're not the only one suffering from tight funds. Ain't that right Honey Lemon?"
"Oh, weeellll, it's just that I need to have completed at least one significant commercial project this year. All those materials cost a lot and I use rather large quantities…" she said nervously.
"It'll turn out fine. What about you, Go-"
"-Ah. Ah. Ah! Don't say it! Stay behind her line, please" Wasabi marched through. At Tadashi's confused look, he elaborated in hushed tones.
"You do not want to cross her, or get her attention in any way today. She is out of caffeine in all forms and shapes and she's in a mood. To top it off, she ran out of bubblegum. So you do NOT want to cross her today."
"But… doesn't that mean she's just sleeping or barely awake?"
"That she was. Until mister smartypants woke her up. Fred made an analogy with a dragon. They sleep, but if they're woken up, they don't rest until they've eaten enough or ripped the one who awakened them to tiny shreds. First time I agree with him."
"Have you even tried talking to her? Or is her grumbling scary enough?"
"Dude, we threw chocolate bars at her from behind the safety line. When we left Fred's signs –they make decent shields by the way- we nearly got decapitated by her wheels! Those things are sharp man! We still haven't gotten the last one out of the wall."
"Huh. Did you get the chocolate back, at least?"
"No" Wasabi mumbled morose.
A loud and scary wail went through the entire complex. Wasabi went whiter than should genetically have been possible for him and froze like a deer caught in the headlights.
"Wasabi? What are you-"
"She got him" he whispered terrified.
"Who got who?"
"She got him, Tad. She got Fred."
"… May he rest in peace, our fallen brother." Tadashi spoke seriously, his baseball cap held respectfully before his chest.
"Maybe he'll rest to comic-heaven." Wasabi offered.
"He wouldn't rest. He'd die again from excitement." His friend snorted.
"And be back on earth. The circle is round." Wasabi concluded with a grin. "In other words : We'll never get rid of him." The two shared a grin.
"Alright, that's enough you two. Now, you're both going to help me calm GoGo down and help Fred." The only present female decided exasperated.
"Sorry Honey Lemon, I've got to be at the professor. Scheduled thing that I have to go to."
"What? Nonononononononononono man, you can't leave me alone in this! You're throwing me for the lions! Right. In. The. Pit!"
"Sorry Wasabi, see you!" he said before he ran off, not sorry at all.
Tadashi chuckled as he heard Honey Lemon drag Wasabi off in their united attempt to save their mascot from an angry GoGo.
*knock-knock-knock*
"Come in" came the response, muffled through the door. Tadashi entered the –by now familiar- room. Quite simply decorated, with lots of red wood which always conveyed a comfortable, warm kind of mood. A big glass panel as the back wall gave natural light to the inhabitants workstation, which consisted of a big black desk which was empty, save for two framed pictures.
"Ah, mister Hamada, come in. Have a seat. Tell me, have you found the solution?"
Tadashi gave a sigh. "I've tried nearly every specialist in San Fransokyo or even any place reasonably around it, but nowhere can they miss enough people, or the demand ridiculous compensations. They are too limited in their field of knowledge, or are not available for the amount of information and time I need. I thought about getting little parts from everybody because it is better than nothing…"
"Don't. You tried your best Hamada, but you forget that you simply don't have the connections yet that will be available even in a few years. Which is why I already contacted someone who I think, should be able to help you better than nearly anyone else."
"Wait, really?"
"Hmm." Came the confirming sound. "He'll be here in an hour. You better be able to present you project Hamada. I'll bring him to your lab."
"Of course sir, thank you! But if you don't mind, who is exactly coming?"
A smile. "Doctor Carlisle Cullen."
Tadashi was rechecking his laid-out plans furiously, it had to be as perfect as possible! This was his shot, his chance that he couldn't afford to miss. The professor had arrived earlier and given a bit more information on the doctor. Apparently he was acknowledged as a specialist in many fields and possibly considered one of the best surgeons in the world, if only he spent more time doing it. At least, so said prof. Callaghan.
A short knock made him freeze in his attempt to present a somewhat cleaner desk and just give up on that part. It'd have to do. He just focused on the voice of the man that was now greeting Callaghan through the door.
"Hello Robert, how are you?" Tadashi heard a slight British accent. 'Rare these days' he thought, distracted but curious.
"Oh, I'm doing alright. Carlisle, it is wonderful to see you again! You look as if you've barely aged, what's your secret?"
"Sorry Robert, can't give away my secret recipe, can I?" he went along in the joke, chuckling.
"Probably for the best. You'd never be able to keep up with the demand. Carlisle, this is the student I spoke about to you, Tadashi Hamada. He'll explain why he needs your expertise and I think you might like his project. "
Tadashi's mouth fell open as the man came in view when he walked in. He had understood that Doctor Carlisle Cullen was a good doctor and surgeon with broad knowledge, otherwise the professor wouldn't have recommended him, but he hadn't anticipated that the man frankly looked better than any male movie-star or model, including those that heavily edited in Adobe Photoshop Cs26. This… this was frankly absurd.
"Hello mister Hamada, I am Carlisle Cullen." He said kindly while extending his hand.
Perfectly tailored grey suit –expensive, from the looks of it- , pale skin, tall, blonde and as strange as it felt to describe a professional medical man with such an adjective, beautiful. He simply didn't know any other word that came close.
"Uh, nice to meet you too sir." 'great Hamada, mumble for your introduction, great job'
"Robert here told me a bit about your project, I must say I'm intrigued." Doctor Cullen continued. Tadashi shrugged the weird beauty of the man off and decided his project was more important.
"Then I'll leave you both to it, Carlisle. But mister Hamada, do you accidentally know why two of your colleagues needed all the ladders we had and a huge trampoline?"
"I think I know that Robert. Apparently someone named Fred was found hanging out of a window, tied by his ankles from the top floor when I arrived. He was screaming something of a dragon needing caffeine and not wanting to be the test-subject of electromagnetic suspended bungee-jumping?" he informed the other two, thoroughly confused himself.
"Mister Hamada?"
"No sir, no idea sir", he said in his best straight face.
"Hmmm. Well, don't let me keep you." and off he went.
"Well, let us begin then."
An hour later all initial awkwardness was gone. Doctor Carlisle Cullen proved to be kind, calm and patient and Tadashi was in the seventh heaven. This was looking better and better! Even if he would have to decline, he already explained all of the basic sectors and how they are defined and categorized by. It helped greatly in the actual planning and gave Tadashi finally a clear picture of what would need to go in Baymax! Perhaps it was the fact that he only looked four or five years older, but Tadashi had no trouble easily talking with him while they worked.
"Well, I work closest with Elena Rodriguez, Wasabe Moginger and Ethel Tomago, even though they respond better to their nicknames by now. Fred Lee is the mascot, he gives them."
"Oh, and what might yours be?"
"… Tad, BaseballCap or just Cap, depending on who you ask." He said embarrassed.
"I suppose they are somewhat logical." Doctor Cullen chuckled. "But is one of the by accident familiar with chemistry and the likes?"
"Sure, Honey Lemon – I mean, Elena is a chemist. Why?"
"I might need some help for something with a small side-project of my own. Nothing big, but it would help things along. Would she be able to accept actual projects? Naturally, she would be compensated."
"Oh, that wouldn't be a problem. She's actually looking for a project that pays – it'll enlarge her funds for materials. Should I get you in contact next time?"
"That would be wonderful."
"Doctor Cullen, if you don't mind me asking… how do you know Professor Callaghan?"
"Oh, I made a few donations to the school and we have both given several lectures in our respective fields in the same schools. We met several times afterwards and had some interesting thoughts about how the medical science was developing."
"What do you think about it?"
Carlisle pondered for a moment. "Every evolution that helps people has it's merit. Especially the present cures and vaccines are very welcomed. The ease with which organ replacement is going solves many things. The gene and DNA altering… while in some cases they are amazing, I find they can be misused too easily. And technology like Virtual Intelligences with Robots for surgery can do things the human body it too limited to perform but is at the same time limited by its platform. I am not against evolution, but when it goes to fast, one must be careful not to get lost in it and misuse it from its true purpose."
Tadashi understood his point somewhat, but found it strange that most of the mentioned things were quite standard now for the past decade. 'Perhaps a different focus in his career', he shrugged it off.
"I think we best halt our progress here, mister Hamada. But you've sufficiently convinced me to help you. Every fortnight I'm in San Fransokyo in the mornings, and I'd be able to help you the remainder of the day. On other times, don't hesitate to call or mail me. I've got enough free time, my wife and family convinced that I should live at home, not in the hospital."
"But, why? Why help me so easily? This could take a massive amount of time, and we don't know if it'll ever work!"
"You mentioned your main motivation is that you simply wanted to help people, correct? That knowing that you did something that helped many people makes you feel good?"
"…Yes?"
"Why do you think I became a doctor, Tadashi? Because I like helping people." He answered with that ever present kind smile as he packed his stuff and walked easily to the door, apparently not tired at all from the hours of collective work. "See you in two weeks, Mister Hamada."
No idea where this is going. Just a random thought that came up and this is the result. Not even sure how far I would take it. No pairings or big stuff, more like "what if" drabbles.
