So, I've noticed a distinct lack of Crossing Lines stories, which is unfortunate, since I think it's a fantastic show. I'm not sure what direction they're taking the show for Season 3, and I don't love the idea of an almost entirely new cast, so this is just my take on what I might prefer to happen. Takes place immediately following the events of the Season 2 finale. Review if you're so inclined.
Tommy sat hunched in an uncomfortable plastic chair, eyes trained on the phone in his hand, willing it to ring. The hospital moved around him; nurses filing charts, nervous relatives sitting in chairs identical to his, but he noticed none of it, too focused on his phone, the blank screen staring up at him sending his thoughts into overdrive.
Why hadn't Dorn called? He had left hours earlier for Spain and no one had heard from him since. Tommy had called multiple times, letting him know the Major had been shot and Hickman had disappeared, but he hadn't heard back. He had called the ICC office, spoken with Dorn's secretary and anyone else he thought might have been able to get in touch with the man, with no luck.
He startled when someone nudged a cup of hot coffee against his hand, looking up to find Seeger seated next to him, looking exhausted.
"Thanks."
She nodded, leaning back in her seat before she spoke.
"No word from Dorn?"
"Nope. Nobody can get ahold of him."
Seeger ran her hand through her hair and let out a harsh breath.
"Has anyone spoken to the Major's wife?"
Tommy nodded.
"Got off the phone with her 'bout a half hour ago. She's on her way."
"Good. That's good."
Tommy just laughed harshly.
"Nothin' about this is good. The Major probably won't survive the night, Hickman's gone off to God know's where after that psycho bitch, Dorn's dropped off the radar, and no one's got a bloody clue about Eva! They could all be dead in a ditch somewhere for all we know!"
Seeger just sighed deeply, taking a sip of her coffee and waiting for Tommy to calm down.
"Even if that's true, what good does it do to give up all hope of a positive outcome?"
Tommy scoffed.
"Seeger, I've learned not to rely on positive outcomes. Sometimes everything just turns to shit."
It was Seeger's turn to scoff.
"That's real helpful, Tommy. So we won't even bother going after Hickman, or looking for Dorn or Eva, because everything's going to turn to shit anyways, so we might as well not even try."
"That's not what I said."
She just shook her head.
"You might as well have."
His answer was interrupted by the ringing of his phone, the echo sounding through the sterile hallway and startling them both. He swiped desperately at the screen before bringing the device to his ear.
"Dorn?" he answered, voice strained.
"Detective McConnel?"
The accented voice on the other end of the line did not belong to Michel Dorn.
"Yeah. Who's this?"
"Sergeant Enzo Bresci, Europol anti-Mafia. I need to speak with you regarding Sergeant Eva Vittoria."
Tommy felt as though his heart had dropped into his stomach, and pure, unadulterated panic filled him as every possible worst case scenario flooded his mind.
Arabela Seeger watched nervously as Tommy spoke on the phone; his face had paled considerably and the expression he wore could only be described as one of utter terror. More than anything that had happened today, that frightened her. Tommy McConnel was not someone easily terrified, so she knew that whatever had happened, it wasn't good. The last thing any of them needed today was more bad news, but as she anxiously watched Tommy's face go paler and paler, she knew that's exactly what they'd be getting.
When she heard him speak for the first time since he'd answered the phone, Tommy's voice was rough and strained, as if he had to fight to make any noise at all.
"Where was this?"
She tried to make eye contact, but he had his gaze directed up at the ceiling .
"Yeah, no, I understand. Of course. I'll be there as soon as I can."
He ended the call but didn't move his eyes from the ceiling tiles. Arabela stood on shaky legs and touched his arm lightly, trying not to startle him.
"Tommy?"
When he spoke, his voice shook and he still didn't look at her.
"They found Eva's gun and badge, covered in blood. And they found a body."
She took a sharp breath.
"Is it..." she couldn't finish the sentence.
"They don't know. It was burned to a crisp, they don't know if they'll be able to get DNA."
There was a moment of silence before he spoke again, this time lowering his head and looking at her with shining eyes, blinking rapidly.
"I need to go to Italy. They don't have her dental records on file. I need to get them and go to Italy."
His sentences were short and clipped, but his voice broke near the end and he shut his eyes tight, bringing his hand to cover his face.
Just as Arabela opened her mouth to speak, Sebastian came through the swinging doors, followed by a frightened looking Rebeca Daniel. Seeing their faces and immediately assuming the worst, Louis' wife burst into tears and Sebastian stopped in his tracks.
"I wasn't gone that long. What happened?"
Seeger looked to Tommy, who had turned his back to the group, and then back to Sebastian and the distraught Mrs. Daniel.
"He's still in surgery. We haven't heard anything yet."
Sebastian slumped over, letting out a breath, as Rebeca let out what she could only assume to be a relieved sob.
"Jesus Arabela, what the hell's with the faces then? You scared us half to death."
She pulled Sebastian off to the side, leaving Rebeca to gather herself again.
"It's about Eva. They found a body in Italy with her gun and credentials. Tommy has to go with her dental records to identify it."
Sebastian's jaw tensed and he let out a harsh breath.
"Shit."
Seeger just nodded, running her hand harshly down her face.
"Yeah. Any word on Hickman or Dorn?"
Sebastian shook his head.
"No. Phone's are off and the police haven't had any sightings of Hickman or Dr. Clark. And Dorn's dropped completely off the radar."
"Right. Of course. If I had known how this day would turn out, I would have stayed in bed."
Sebastian snorted.
"If I had known how this day would turn out, I would have stayed in Germany."
