A Whole Decade Gone

Lucy stares at herself in the mirror. The turquoise dress shouldn't look so nice on her, but even she has to admit she looks cute in it. She tilts her head, letting a small smile shine through. She twirls and the dress flaps up, revealing her legs.

There's a knock on her door and it opens. "Hey, Lucy. Ready to celebrate?"

Lucy nods and waves at her big sister.

"I can't believe it's been a whole decade since I've been an only child. The time sure has flown," Molly announces with a cheeky grin.

Lucy sticks her tongue out.

"Is that the new dress Mum bought for you?"

Lucy does a pose as if saying, 'You like?'

Molly nods. "Looking good, Luce. Everyone else is almost all here, but we need the guest of honor to grace us with her presence."

Lucy grins and races pass Molly out of the room. She arrives just as her dad is lighting the candles on her birthday cake. It's covered in purple and turquoise swirl frosting. The colors shouldn't go together, but they are her favorite, and they had to go to two bakeries to find one that could do both colors of frosting. It's shaped in the form of a rabbit, her favorite animal.

Lucy claps her hands in excitement.

Audrey comes out of the kitchen with plates, forks, and napkins. "There's my baby girl!"

"Not a baby anymore, Mom," Molly says in Lucy's defense.

"Both of my daughters will always be my baby girls. There's no getting away from that," Audrey warns.

Percy nods his agreement. "It's a fact that children never grow up in their parents' eyes."

Lucy rolls her eyes. She runs over to Lily who's playing with a doll. Lily is one of the youngest cousins in the family; the only one that's younger is Louis. Still, Lucy loves playing with Lily because Lily isn't old enough for there to be awkward silences due to Lucy being unable to talk. She chatters too much for there ever to be much silence.

Lucy can listen to Lily forever.

She waves at Fred and Roxie who has arrived with Uncle George and Aunt Angie. Fred and Roxie wave, but they don't come over.

It's only been three years since Lucy stopped talking, but unfortunately, Fred and Roxie still find it hard to be around her.

She stares down at her lap, Lily's chatter still going on. Some days, she really misses her voice, but she's thankful for her parents and Molly. Especially Molly. Before the accident, Molly and Lucy rarely got along. They were always fighting. But when it happened, Molly stepped up as a big sister and became Lucy's number one supporter.

She's just so thankful for that unconditional love and support.

Tears come to her eyes.

"Why are you crying, Lucy?" Lily innocently asks.

Lucy sniffles and brushes them off her cheeks and shakes her head. She forces a smile on her face and gestures for Lily to go back to her conversation. Lily stares at her for a moment but then continues talking as if nothing happened.

Molly comes and sits with the two of them, dragging Lucy into a loose embrace. Lucy's forced smile turns genuine. She wonders if she'll ever get her voice back—doctors are working on it—but she knows that even if she doesn't, as long as she has Molly, she'll be okay.
