She could hear them calling out for her. They were wondering where she was. It was only a matter of time before they figured out where she was going. Walking, bent over against the bitter winter gale. She made her way slowly through the snow as it crunched beneath her feet. The already gray sky was getting darker threatening snow, but the heartless wind kept blowing offering no relief. Silent tears slipped down her face but there would be no stopping until she reached her destination.

She pushed on, between the ruins of the old village walking through dim battleground. She was moving through the rows of charred homes, until finally finding the one she was looking for. Kneeling down the young girl placed flowers at the doorway.

Numbness was the only thing she felt. Not because of the cold, but because of the loss. She couldn't believe she was gone, not even the warm smile and gentle laugh of her mother was safe from death.

"Mama" Her voice was hardly even audible above the harsh wind. It tossed her hair around her face, but she didn't seem to care. "Why did they take you…?"

She stood there, how long she didn't know. As hours passed the night surrounded her, the only light from the bobbing lanterns in the distance. The silence leaving her feeling even more alone than before.

Until felt a hand on her shoulder.

"Katara. It's time to go." His voice was warm. She didn't have to turn around to know who it was. The lantern in his hand was illuminating everything around, refracting off the large shards of ice that stuck out of the ground.

"Go away."

"Gran gran is worrying about you. Come on, let's go."

She shrugged his hand off her shoulder. "You go. I'm never going back there."

"There was nothing you could do. Nothing anyone could do. She was hurt, Katara, he was going to die-" His sentence was cut short by a strike across the face.

"Shut up." She said angrily. She was a mess, only a child, dealing with the loss of the one person she thought would never leave her. By now the only thing anyone could see when they looked at her was sadness. Most of them just stopped looking.

He pulled her close in a tight embrace. She was stunned for a moment. When she realized what had happened she hugged him back, resting her head against his shoulder.

"Sokka, I don't know what to do." His parka muffled her voice.

"Come on. You'll be alright." Her older brother reassured gently.

There was silence, not an awkward silence but a pensive one. Snow fell from the sky coating everything in a blanket of white. The flowers froze, the frost leaving swirling designs on the petals.

"Lets go home."

A/N: Okay….. this turned out way more depressing than I wanted…. Please comment and tell me what you think. I haven't written any fiction in a while but I tried to make the ending a little hopeful/upbeat-y-ish…
