Darkness, Daniel knew, was much more than just the insufficiency of light. It was something far more real and terrifying than that. No, the darkness he knew in the corridors of Brennenburg was no normal darkness. Its shadows weren't mere patches of black. All of it was far more violent, brutal and real.
Eyes worryingly checking the level of oil in his lantern and hands flitting in pockets in search of more tinder boxes, Daniel slowly continued down the stone corridor. A couple of lit torches illuminated his path. Dully though and even with the flickering lights of torches, he felt like he was shrouded in the darkness. It was like a cloak, it was like sinking, it was like falling into a never ending pit. This was true darkness. This was pain. This was...now his life.
Feet stumbling and head pounding, Daniel continued staggering towards the end of the corridor. What could be at its end made him want to curl up in fear and hide but he knew he couldn't. Unless he evaded them, they would find him.
After stepping barely meters from the last lit torch, sweat began sliding down Daniel's cheeks. His breath and heart sped up and he hurriedly pulled out the lantern and with shaking fingers turned it on. Its light was warm yet still not comforting. The darkness was still suffocating him, still drowning him mercilessly in fear.
And because Daniel knew that the darkness of Brennenburg was no mere blackness, he took a deep breath and hurried down the corridor, ready to meet his fate.
