A/N: So I was suddenly inspired to write this. So here I am… writing it.
KAIRI
I can't believe they forgot my birthday. Last year, the day after my birthday, they both promised me they would be back in time for my birthday. Well today is my birthday and it is currently 11:55 p.m. and still no sign of either of them.
I tried to ignore the sadness that welled up inside of me. My best friends wouldn't be here to celebrate my birthday with me. Tears welled up in my eyes.
11:56.
They weren't coming. They were to busy off saving the worlds or something. Who was I compared to the worlds? No one, that's who.
I looked out across the moonlit water and wished that I could see them if only for a second. Riku and Sora. My best friends. My best friends who weren't coming.
I sat on the cold sand. Alone. Wow this birthday really sucks.
11:58.
I wiped the tears away and stood up. Why torture myself any longer? They weren't coming so why wait? I started to walk up the beach towards the road.
I didn't hear the footsteps behind me until it was too late. Arms were thrown around me and drew me against a warm body.
"You didn't actually thinking we'd forget your birthday did you?" Sora asked me. "You're here!" I said as I turned around and wrapped my arms around him tightly.
Sora felt a little different in my arms. Not as soft as he used to be. A little taller, too. I pulled away and inspected him. He had a large scar on his forearm. I ran my fingers over it.
"How did this happen?" I asked him curiously. "Really rough battle. Luckily, Riku was there and helped me through it." He said. He brought his hands up to my face and gently rubbed his thumbs over my cheeks.
"You've been crying." He said. He looked worried. "I thought you guys weren't going to be coming… Speaking of which, where is Riku?" I asked.
Sora pulled his eyes away from my face and looked around. "He was just here a minute ago. I have no idea where he went. Anyway, I got you something for your birthday." He took a step back from me and said "Close your eyes." I nodded and did as he said.
I heard clinking and then something cool went over my head and rested above my cleavage. I was just about to open my eyes when Sora said "Wait. Don't open your eyes yet. I still have something else to give to you." Sora waited a few seconds. Then I heard a rustle of fabric as he leaned forward and gently placed his mouth on mine.
I could tell he was waiting for me to signal that it was ok. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer. He put his hands on my waist and practically crushed my body to his.
All thoughts of where Riku had flown out my head as Sora eased my mouth open with his tongue.
Sora broke the kiss and whispered against my lips "I've been waiting a long time to do that."
In answer I pushed my lips up against his so that we were kissing again. I never wanted to let go.
RIKU
I watched as they kissed. Kairi and Sora. Sora had told me he was going to kiss her tonight. There wasn't anyway I could've replied to that without revealing my true feelings to him so I just kept quiet.
Sora pulled away for a moment and then Kairi pulled him back. I had to fight against the pain as it felt like my heart had just shattered into a million pieces.
I guess this is how it's going to be for now on. Sora and Kairi together, me in the shadows; alone.
I dropped Kairi's present on the sand. It was a beautiful mirror that was two-way. I had the other mirror so we would be able to talk if she ever got lonely. It broke. Good. Just like my heart.
