She stares at them longingly across the common room, her heart aching for what could have been. She had realized too late what her feelings truly were. She had spent so much wasted time pushing him away, only to realize now that she had pushed him straight into another's waiting arms.
She should have seen the signs. They were practically joined at the hip. Wherever he was, so was the other, but she had thought it was purely platonic. She missed the light touches and the long looks. She ignored the whispers and the gossip from the others that had seen the signs before her. Maybe if she had, she would have stopped the games, she wouldn't have been so cocky to think he would wait for her to finally accept.
She sees him, his head in the lap of his one true love and she can't help the jealousy that rages inside her. That could have been her, that could have been his head on her lap, her hands playing his hair, but it was not. Instead, she sat alone just looking in from the outside.
They share a few words and then a soft tender kiss to cement the deal and she looks away. She can't bear to see anymore. She leaves the common room, her heart beating painfully against her ribcage, thinking about what could've been.
