Nunquam Solus

Hedwig hooted, perched on Harry's arm, as they stepped outside into the chilly morning air. The grounds were covered completely with snow, and Harry wrapped the scarf around his neck more securely as he trudged through it. Everything was silent- nobody else was up yet. The courtyard, too, was deserted. Hedwig shuffled around as she prepared to take flight. Spreading her wings, she took off, her snowy-white coat blending perfectly with the background. Slowly she ascended, weaving through the castle's spiraling turrets and slanting rooftops, swooping back down for a detour every now and then. Hedwig soared among the castle's tallest peaks and disappeared behind a lone tower, remerging only to become one with the sky, a mere tiny speck in the distance. Harry watched until she was no longer visible, and then turned his back, shoulders hunched to avoid the biting cold. He made his way back up to the castle feeling slightly lonely, but thinking that maybe Ron or Hermione might be awake by now and they could have breakfast together.
