Don't Wake Up Baby
Rory opened the door and to her surprise found Luke sitting on the stoop.
"Luke," she called down.
"Rory?" Luke looked confused, he hadn't heard the twist of the door handle and he'd made of point of listening out for it. Rory looked down on the cafe owner wondering why he hadn't stood up, talked to her face to face. Looking down on him she could see his eyes were red, possibly from crying. Also she noticed bags under Luke's eyes. She wondered if they had always been there and if it was the angle she was seeing him from that made them visible.
"Luke, what's wrong?" Rory asked, a straight confidence in her voice. Luke wondered how she always managed to sound so confident, even in embarrassing situations and public speeches.
"Rory," Luke sighed. He decided to raise his position. He stood now face to face with his ex-fiancé's daughter. "Rory something happened...maybe we should sit down, inside." Luke gestured, the worrying tone shocked Rory Gilmore. On many occasions had she heard Luke's stern voice. Never had she heard sadness in his familiar tone.
"What happened Luke?" Rory decided to dispense with any politeness or pleasantry- she wanted to know what had upset Luke, right there and then.
"Rory...there was an accident, a car accident." A thought raced through her mind. Mom.
"What happened Luke?" She repeated, her voice was broken and barely audible.
"Lorelai...she was picking up stuff...I guess for the inn. She had parked. Y'know the road next to that huge new supermarket, y'know?" Rory nodded, she had heard about the new store, "Filands" or something, her mom had repeatedly told her she could get buckets of gummy bears for as little as 99 cents. "Well anyway. Your mom, Lorelai. She was crossing the road to get to the place and..." Luke looked down, he didn't want to have to say what he was about to have to say. "Lorelai was hit by a car, she died at the scene." Tears escaped from Luke's eyes, he had desperately tried to stay strong for Rory, as if that would dampen her reaction. Rory stood in the doorway, frozen.
A/N-
The story will basically explore the idea of death and how losing someone affects those left behind. Sorry about the sadness but sometimes life isn't a 100,000,000 wpm conversation.
