Scales of Balance

The darkness had started to creep back into Scully's soul. All the things which she had experienced in the last decade had all lead to this moment. There she sat with the prophetic scales of balance. On one side there were the things that she had lost, voluntarily or reluctantly. There laid her father, her brothers respect, her once 'normal' life, her daughter she did not know, her family, her cancer, a past student, her past lover and mentor, her past lover and professor, The Lone Gunmen, her sister, her Mulder, her William their son. On the opposite sat all the things she gained, willingly or not. In warped arrangement where her confidence, her experience, her faith in God, her faith in the unknown in the unexplained in supernatural, her Mulder, her friends Skinner, The Lone Gunmen, Monica Reyes, John Doggett, her mother (who was the only family who was left to her), her cancer and its reappearance, her memories of William – of Mulder – of those who were now gone. No one would ever take those memories from her. They were all she had left. Everything around her started to disappear as the darkness that she had been hiding from began its progress of taking her. For so long Scully believed that she could fight the cancer again and could win. For so long she held off the darkness with the memories of those who once cared about her. Scully never believed that she would truly die in a hospital, after all the times that she and Mulder were at deaths door in the field she came to an understanding that a hospital would not be the last thing she saw. Mulder had promised this too, when she was battling her cancer the first time. He swore that she would not die in the hospital of cancer, that she still had a life to live. How this humored her now. The only thing left for her was to just relive the pain again and again. However, Monica had also taken an oath but to Mulder. That she would look after Scully for him and that she did. Monica with John and Skinner helped the weak pained Scully into the car. From there Mrs. Scully drove them to the cemetery. Scully looked around as her friends and mother laid her down onto the softest grass. The darkness had come to take one Dana Katherine Scully and she didn't want to fight it anymore. Scully lay there and shut her eyes for the last time as the darkness took her soul from the world to another. Another world where she didn't have to face the prophetic scales of balance again and where she didn't have to suffer anymore loss. The darkness she had been fighting for so long carried her back to the one she loved, to a place and time where she was safe to wait for the ones who had taken her to the soft grass. As the group of mourning friends supported and hugged one another they looked up from Scully's now lifeless form and repeated the words of grave stone they laid her in front of… I Want to Believe.
