AN: It's been a while. But...well, things have come up and this is the first time I've been able to do anything like this in a while. This is dedicated to a friend of mine, not that he'll see it. He's been dead for a while, but well...the song I used as inspiration - Wake Me Up by Avicii - was always one of his favorite songs after I got to know him. I didn't know him long, but he was sweet.
Anyway, it's weird, but I wanted to do this just so I knew I had it out of my head.
It was hard to believe that it had been so recent. Kankri had just up and left, leaving Karkat to his own devices. Karkat was doing his best to go about things as usual, but it seemed so long since he'd left and it was finally bothering him.
Of course, he wouldn't let anyone know. It wasn't worth the ridicule he'd get if people thought he was being too kind, to sensitive.
So, he kept to himself, kept his cold mask up, trying his best to seem like everything was okay. Not that it was the truth. But it was all he could do to keep people from tormenting him further.
As he walked into the school building for the final time before Thanksgiving break, he knew the day wasn't going to be good. Everyone would be talking about their plans with their families for break, and he'd be expected to do the same. And quite honestly, the idea of facing the holiday alone was terrifying and more than slightly depressing.
He went through the first three classes no problem, able to avoid all conversations. And then his fourth period, last one before lunch, came about and the teacher was expecting everyone to talk about their plans. In front of everyone. And Captor and Makara were in there, so there was no way that Karkat would escape without any sort of comments made. He hated it, but it wasn't like he could avoid it. Unfortunately.
As soon as the class started, Karkat wanted to turn and leave, but he knew he couldn't.
So he toughed it out. He should have known better. As soon as the words left his mouth, explaining he'd be alone for the holiday, the pitying looks started and the other two trolls started making comments, thinking that it was just a joke. They stopped when Karkat's masks finally fell and he threw them a hurt look.
Gamzee's eyes widened. "Karbro, you're serious?" he asked in surprise.
Karkat glared at him, as if he was an idiot for having to ask.
Needless to say, he wasn't too happy the rest of the day. The other trolls in the school found out from the two, all of them spending the day talking, planning. While they all agreed that it was hard to get along with the Cancerian troll, they weren't about to let him suffer through alone like he'd been doing for a while.
As such, the entire time they were planning at lunch, they kept a steady stream of worried looks thrown in Karkat's direction, since he was eating alone that day. It was obvious he didn't want to be around people, but there was no help for that.
When break came around, Karkat was surprised to find visitors as soon as he was up and dressed for the day. He frowned at them. "Any reason you're here?"
No replies really came, just the normal chatter from the entire group.
This continued for several days. When Thanksgiving finally rolled around, the entire group ended up at Karkat's house, not wanting the boy to be alone on the holiday.
Of course, Karkat acted like he hated every second of it. But they could all tell that he was glad they'd done so. It wasn't something he could hide behind dirty looks.
And this is terrible. But...eh, I'm in class, not doing my work to type this. I'll do a better thing at a later date. This is just...there.
