Water
Japan dreams of waves. He has no idea where he is, but he remembers waves lapping against a shore and the smell of water pressing against him and blue, blue, blue.
He is an island nation. He is used to water, used to oceans, used to its cruelty and its beauty.
When Japan was younger, he sometimes dreamt of calm waters turning angry, going in his lungs but never out. He wakes up in the middle of the night and runs to his caretaker, crying crying crying and suffocating because his tears are water too, will they kill me too?China doesn't know how to answer, but does his best to comfort the then-child nation.
Water destroys life, but water also gives life, he said, gently placing a hand on his head and staring right into his eyes.
Death is the more infinite of the two, Japan challenged, sniffling quietly. Once you die, you never come back.
That doesn't make death something to fear, China whispered and smiled at him. Someday, you'll realize what I mean.
Japan thinks he might understand now, surrounded by water and like in his dreams it is going in his lungs but doesn't go out and he needs air, he needs that precious oxygen for survival. It was a simple earthquake (Japan has had his fair share of those), but in the end the water that gave his people life is the same that will steal theirs away.
Death is imminent, but Japan feels no fear. Japan has many regrets, yes, but what can he do about them now? Better to be at peace with oneself than to go suffering horribly all the while…
His people are dying, and so many of them are already dead. Japan feels himself slipping away to join them and he has never felt so at peace before. He closes his eyes in acceptance.
To his surprise, Japan is bodily dragged out of the water (murderer, killer of his people) and when he blearily opens his eyes they are met with China's passionate, furious eyes. He can hear China shout – Idiot, idiot, this wasn't what I meant, you still don't understand, you're still such a child – and Japan thinks that's alright, since now he has a little bit more time to be a child.
Japan falls asleep again and dreams of water, trickling down his throat and giving life.

One Year Later
This is a rather sporadic drabble that kind of goes all over the place. Please inform me of any grammatical or spelling errors. One year ago, the earthquake and tsunami occurred in Japan. So many people supported Pray for Japan. I'm sure Japan is grateful. :D
