Part of the Start and Stop challenge, word: "endings", Part of the Are you crazy enough to do it challenge, prompt: 192. (era) Founders Era

So there were always endings. To everything. Friendship, love. Godric turned around. 'That's it,' he said, and his voice cracked. He sat down. 'It's done, guys. He's gone. And he won't return.'

He sat down on the ground and stared into the air, only the air. He didn't wish to see anything but air, empty air.

'He can't return, come to that,' he said.

Helga bent down and sat next to him. She took his head. 'I'm sorry,' she said gently. Rowena joined them on the ground.

For a moment they merely stared at the castle. Their work, what they had achieved – together. All four of them, not three.

'He wasn't worth it,' Rowena said after a while of silence. 'You have got to see that, Godric, he was not behaving like -' She paused for a second to look at him, 'like a friend.'

'I know.' Godric got up and turned away from them. He didn't want to look into their faces. He didn't want to hear them telling him Salazar had behaved wrongly. He knew that, painfully, and he needed no reminder. 'I know,' he said motionless.

Helga put her hand on his shoulder. 'There was no help to it,' she said, 'our thoughts were too different, that simple. It had to come the way it did.'

'Don't linger over him,' Rowena said.

Godric didn't look at them. They didn't understand. Salazar had been his friend. For years, and now... Gone. It wasn't Salazar he would be missing, it would be their friendship. He felt like a part of him had died. Life, after all, always came to a close one day.

Godric hoped for a happy ending for himself, but he had always figured his friend to be on his side then.
