I do not own Gakuen Alice. If I did, I wouldn't be writing fan fiction, now, would I?
Melancholic Melody
"…I liked our date on your birthday the most," Mikan said in half a whisper as she held Natsume's hand. "It was a long day. We had lunch in a small café in Central Town. I ate two slices of strawberry shortcake and you had pesto because you refused to have sweets for lunch.
"You bought me a red balloon and a box of Howalons after that so I'd stop talking to you about Hotaru. You said you hated it when I talked about her a lot because you didn't like her very much. You do, though; I know you care about her somehow. You just wanted all my attention to be on you whenever we were alone. At least that's what I think. It makes me happy when I think that, so I don't think there's anything wrong with your not liking it when I talk about other people."
Mikan smiled a smile that wasn't quite complete; her eyes held unhappiness as the beeping sounds from the heart monitor gradually slowed down.
She wiped a tear from her eye before it could manage to roll down her cheek. She held the unconscious Natsume's hand with both of hers now.
"We did a lot that day, but the sunset was my favourite part. We sat under our tree. We were really quiet, so I stood up and held my hand out, and then I asked you to dance. You remember that, don't you?" Strong emotions welled up, so that Mikan had to stop herself from crying. She knew that if she cried, she'd be taking in the fact that Natsume had less than a ten percent chance of making it. She couldn't do that. Optimism wasn't a strong weapon at the moment, but she had to try.
"You just kept a straight face and looked away," she continued. "I turned red from embarrassment, also because I was furious that you practically rejected. But then you took my hand anyway. We danced to nothing but the setting sun, so long that later on we found ourselves dancing under the stars.
"You said you found it stupid that we weren't dancing to any music, so I started to sing something. Then you asked me to shut up because you thought my voice was horrible and that I was singing it off key."
Then the beeping got slower yet again, which made Mikan lose more hope than she'd already let pass.
"You wanted to stop dancing, but I didn't. So I hummed a tune I made up in my head. That way—" Mikan paused due to the tears fighting their way out. "That way, you wouldn't… have been able… to tell if I was… singing off key," she said between sniffs and sobs, her words barely audible enough for anyone to understand.
She wiped her tears off her face with her sleeves. "I remember perfectly," she said.
Quietly, Mikan started humming the familiar tune. She hummed louder after each note, hoping with all her heart that her voice would wake him. The heart monitor, however, refused to increase the speed of its beeping.
She continued to hum the tune, slowly losing hope that Natsume would soon show her his solicitous red eyes.
With every note she sang, the beeping slowed down. Then the worst thing she could have expected to happen happened. As she sang the long high-pitched note to end the song she hurtfully sang with hopes to have Natsume back, the heart monitor sang with her.
Its long agonizing sound continued on as Mikan's voice trailed off and turned to soft, muffled weeps.
Author's Notes: Because of all the debates going on about if Natsume died in the manga or not, I decided to just kill him off here. XD
I hope you enjoyed this… or not.
