"Wendy, it's going to be story time soon!" Mary, Wendy's mother, called out to the little girl who was hurrying to get ready.
Wendy Moira Angela Darling was only three years old, yet very pretty for her age. Wendy loved story time.
Every night, her mother would tell her a story before she would go to sleep. The stories her mother told were usually fairytales.
Wendy pulled on her nightgown and hurriedly and clumsily untied her hair, letting her brunette curls fall forward. She then ran out of the bathroom and into the nursery, where she slept, and joined her mother on her bed.
"Oh, Wendy," her mother laughed, "Please do not jump so much. You know we are expecting a baby."
Wendy stared down at her mother's huge belly. It had gotten big after she found out she was expecting a baby.
"Does that mean I shall be a big sister soon?" Wendy had asked her mother when she told her that she was pregnant.
"Sorry, Mother," Wendy apologized. She got up hastily, and arranged herself in a position such that she was sitting up on her bed, covered under her bed sheets.
"Now, let me tell you about the story of Peter Pan," her mother started.
Wendy listened in awe as she was taken into the world of Neverland, where Peter Pan lived. Pirates, fairies and mermaids lived there as well.
"Mermaids?" Wendy cried out eagerly. Her mother placed a finger to Wendy's lips. She continued, "Now, mermaids aren't as you think they are. These mermaids could drown you if you get too close!"
Wendy gasped. "Mermaids are also counted as dark creatures. They are in contact with anything dark happening around Neverland. All you need to do is ask them. But of course, you must know their language in order to communicate with them," her mother said.
"Mermaids have a different language?" Wendy inquired. Her mother nodded. "Not much people know their language, though. It is rather difficult to learn their language. But of course, Peter knows their language. Since he is the one who keeps all the people in Neverland safe from the pirates and other bad things, he has to communicate with the mermaids to know what bad things are happening around Neverland," her mother further explained.
Once her mother was done telling the story, she tucked Wendy into bed and gave her a kiss on the forehead. "But," she suddenly said. Wendy, who was snuggled up in bed, glanced up at her mother. "Peter doesn't really have a happy ending like most fairytales do. He is quite lonely, frankly. He is not loved. Not in that way."
"Oh," Wendy said. She couldn't imagine not being loved.
"Good night, darling," Mary said before switching off the light and closing the door as she left. Wendy stared at the ceiling, thinking of Peter Pan. She smiled, closed her eyes, and drifted to sleep.
