Flashback:

A beautiful ceremony was held in the ballroom of the Smash Mansion. Flecks of dress fabric swayed over the shoes of the couples dancing. The entree table was fully decorated to look astonishing. Of course, Kirby's gluttonious attitude caused him to inhale most of the entrees. Smiles beamed across the blushing faces of the 34 smashers. However, the cheerful atmosphere was interrupted when a series of small wheezes were heard...

Meta Knight sat in the dark corner of the large ballroom, unnoticed. Ness placed the final lantern in the shrine surrounding Kirby's photograph. 33 pearl colored lanterns glowed on the solemn faces of the 32 smashers.

Ike stepped upon a sturdy chair behind the shrine. "Today, we are gathered to remember our beloved brother, Kirby." Ike bowed his head, raising his eyes to the large group in front of him. "And also let us forgive Meta Knight; he was not able to attend tonight." Ike lowered his eyes to the shrine. "Anyway, Kirby was poisoned at our post-tournament ceremony...."

As Ike went on with his speech, Meta Knight crouched in the black corner. No light shone onto his mask. He felt not a tinge of guilt for lying to the Smash Mansion. The reason he did so, was sorrow. None had seen Meta Knight in tears, or deeply affected by anything. He was so solemn, almost emotionless. But a flame ignited within his icy heart tonight. As long as he was alive, Kirby had always seemed a nuisance to Meta. Meta would always lecture him, asking him to leave. However deep down, Meta did not mind it at all.

Even the toughest of fighters, such as Snake and Captain Falcon, were holding back tears. The pain burned so deeply within Meta's heart. The shame he harbored was immense, and he tried to avoid his thoughts. All of the times he had asked Kirby to leave. Finally, Kirby had left for good. Meta had never gotten the chance to tell him that he didn't mind at all. Kirby never would understand, he was truly the most cherished friend Meta had.

Later that night after the memorial, Meta stepped onto the balcony on the top floor of the mansion. The moon glowed, much brighter than the lanterns. When in deep thought, a hand gave him a photo of Kirby. Meta turned around, and there stood Ike.

"I thought you might want this, to keep."

"...Thank you..." Meta said.

Before Meta could confess that he lied, Ike had left. Meta looked at the picture. Kirby's pink face and adorably innocent blue eyes stared back at him...

"And every time I miss you, I can just look up..."

A tear fell from Meta's eye.

"And know the stars are holding you tonight..."
