After returning to Earth from Atlantis, John and Rodney fell into a routine. Once a month Rodney would visit John at a cabin that air force had provided for the colonel. It was a beautiful cabin. It was a ways away from the city, but still a close drive in case of emergencies. There was a small lake in the back, big enough to have a dock so that whoever occupied the small home could fish or paddle a boat out to the middle just to get away. Rodney and John would use the dock most of the time as a place to sit, drink a few cold beers and talk.
They talked about home, Earth, their new jobs there, and disasters that they wished they were going through back home instead of being stuck here. Neither of them knew exactly when the monthly visit turn to twice a month, or when they became every weekend. Neither of them cared though.
Every week John would go out and buy Rodney's favorite beer then stock the fridge with it. He'd order take out an hour before the time that Rodney's flight would land, so that when the scientist came walking through the door he'd have food to eat. John made sure that there were power bars waiting on the spare bedrooms dresser, knowing the man would need them when he arrived. Rodney hardly noticed these kind gestures. John noticed several things that Rodney didn't.
John noticed that when Rodney arrived he was tense, but when he left two days later, he was relaxed and loose again. John noticed the way that Rodney took a small taste of whatever he was eating before actually taking a bite, afraid of what might be in his food. He noticed how he looked in his new work clothes, finally being out of the military issued uniforms. And John noticed the lack of sparkle in his eyes when he left each week when just hours before it was there shining brightly.
John wished there was something he could do to keep the man from growing tense each week. He wanted to assure Rodney that he didn't have to taste things any more, that there was nothing going to hurt him while he was around. John wished there was a way to keep the sparkle in Rodney's eyes. John wished a lot of things. And every week John said he'd accomplish at least one of them. And every week John lets Rodney go with out a single word.
