Narrow Gaze

"An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made, in a narrow field" - Niels Bohr

Nightshift in a motel could be lonely, boring work, so Ira was hooked the moment he saw them pull up outside in that flashy, butch car of theirs. Talk about making a statement.

The two men seemed to be discussing something at length. This apparently involved much stoic staring off into the distance and running of hands through hair. They finally wandered over to the office with an odd hobbling-like swagger.

And boy, did they turn on the charm. Unsurprising then, their card was declined. They muttered together in a huddle as they counted out cash.

"We can sleep in the car," said taller guy.

Shorter fellow-and Ira used the term relatively-shook his head, "I'm getting you into a bed, no arguments." Ira raised an eyebrow at that.

Tall guy winced as he leaned down for his holdall, probably just a bad back, but the other man was all over him, patting and gentle prodding. It was quite a sight.

"Have a good evening, fellas," Ira said with a wink, as he passed them their room key.

He shrugged at the funny look he got in return; he might live in a small town but he wasn't narrow-minded!
