It was warm outside, the sun was bright and the breeze was just right. The day would have been without a care if she hadn't been standing in a cemetery… Emily Prentiss was standing over the grave of Ian Doyle, with a little blond haired boy by her side.
If anyone from the BAU were to find out that she had paid for a small lot and headstone for this man she would never hear the end of it. But, then again, it wasn't all for her. A small headstone read "Ian Doyle: Loving Father."
She hadn't really known what to put down. She couldn't really put down, exquisite lover, international criminal, or ghost from assignments past. The only thing that was certain was how much he loved his son. She'd also wanted Declan to know that even though people did horrible things in life, every cloud had a silver lining…
"So, what do you think?" She asked, putting her arm around Declan's shoulder. It had been his idea to come today, on his birthday of all days. But she didn't have the heart to tell him no.
"Shouldn't we have gotten flowers or something?" He asked looking up at her.
She bit her lip smiling, "Oh, honey your dad would have been very happy that you came. He wouldn't care that there are no flowers."
"But all the other ones have flowers or decorations," he insisted.
"Hon, I know you don't remember your dad very much, but I promise you he—well he didn't like flowers very much anyways." She said rolling her eyes and giving him a reassuring smile.
Declan just looked back down at the grave and knelt down in the grass. Gently he reached out and touched the headstone with his fingers. Emily couldn't help but feel her eyes water. It was just like the airstrip all over again.
"Em, why was Ian with you guys on the airstrip? He didn't do it… That woman—my mom, did right?"
Emily paused, "Declan, your dad, he did a lot of bad things in his life. Nobody is perfect. But, your dad came with us to save you. He knew something bad might happen, but he was willing to do it for you. You meant the WHOLE world to him, okay? He would have done anything to get you home safe okay?" She asked kneeling down next to him.
He nodded. He looked so lost, so confused. She knew he didn't remember much about Ian Doyle, he hadn't seen him for 8 years. But she couldn't let him think about Ian in such a horrible way… She just couldn't.
Almost inaudible, she heard him say, "I won't forget you." He wiped the back of his hand across his eye. Emily felt her heart break for the kid, and she didn't stop the tear that slid down her cheek. She reached over and pulled Declan close in a tight hug.
After a moment she kissed the top of his head and said, "Alright kid, you ready for some birthday cake now?" She said pulling away looking at him. He nodded. They stood up and brushed the grass off their clothes, she took his hand and they started to walk back to the car.
Emily couldn't stop herself from looking over her shoulder though. It was weird, being there with Declan and him, it was almost as if she could feel his blue eyes looking at her, smell the cologne he wore. As Declan hopped into the car, she blew a kiss one more time and whispered, "Goodbye, Ian."
