The Phone Call
Faith sat at her desk staring at her latest case file. She'd been there since six thirty the day before. She got called in and hadn't left. She had learned to pack and extra suit for days like this. She hadn't eaten since the hamburger the day before at lunch, which she didn't get to finish. She slammed the file closed and buried her face in her hands and then ran them through her hair and sat there. She'd been a detective for over a month now still not used to being called, Detective.
Lieutenant James Miller was on his way out for the night. His month at the 55 had been eventful, Cruz being investigated by the FBI and IAB, Jelly having his heart attack, and his own request to go back to Brooklyn Homicide being denied. He walked passed Faith. She was sitting there looking over her file. He watched her slam it closed and he jumped, "Detective," he said not getting a response, "Detective," He said louder, once again nothing, "Yokas," he said, finally getting her to jump
She turned slowly, "Yes Lieutenant," She said as she stood.
"I was on my way to get some food, would you care to join me. I know you haven't eaten since yesterday at noon," he said stepping inside the office.
She smiled, "Thank you but no thank you I've got to finish this case."
"Detective one thing I've learn over the years is you can't live on coffee and donuts for a whole day and solve a case. Believe me I've been there, done that, bought the T-shirt." He joked, "Come on. Have dinner with me?"
She sighed and looked at the case file then back at Lieutenant Miller, she nodded, "Fine I could probably stand for the exercise."
"Very good," he said as he took her coat off the hook on the wall a holding it out for her, "Where to your choice?" he asked helping her put her jacket on.
She smiled as she put the jacket on, "Really my choice, huh? You a meat and potatoes type of Guy," she asked jokingly
"What guy isn't, Detective," he replied opening the door for her.
"Thank you, how about Martha's over on 101st and Finch. Bosco and I ate there a lot." She said, "Call me Faith."
"Sounds good to me, Faith," he said, "Since I get to call you Faith call me James," He said, "So Detective…" he said just as he cell phone rang.
"Hold that thought," she said as she flipped open the phone, "Yokas…Rose, I need you to slow down and calm down and tell me what's going on…What? When," she said turning her back to Lieutenant Miller just as a tear fell, "I'll be there soon," she said closing the phone and bringing a hand to her mouth.
"Is everything alright Detect…Faith," He asked.
"My partner died ten minutes ago," she said in shock, "He was stable this morning." She said her voice cracking.
He took a step forward and put a hand on her shoulder, "I'm sorry. I'll take you to the hospital."
She turned and smiled weakly, "Thank you, Lieutenant," she said allowing him to lead her to the car. She got in slowly tears falling silently down her cheeks.
He ran around to the driver side, and got in. Funny how the weather changes, with people moods, he thought as he drove and rain started falling. Funny how a phone call ruins plans, but the best laid plans of mice and men often go array.
TBC…. Should I continue
