"Now come on ladies settle down," ValJean said calmly, "and someone say how this began"

"At the end of the day," the worker said, "She's the one who began it-"

"I don't want accusations. I want facts. What happened?"

"She has a child. She has to pay some family to take care of her child and we can guess how she does that"

"Perhaps you can," Valjean said, "I make it a habit not to guess."

"You have to let her go?"

"Faintine," he asked, "Tell me your side of the story."
Faintine explained the story.

"Oh okay. First of all I'm going to pay for you to get your child back and I'm going to raise your salary enough so you'll be able to properly care for her."

"That's appreciated Monsieur but I have no living arrangements. I can't very well raise her in the streets"

"That isn't a problem," Valjean replied, "There is lodging in my residence. You and your daughter will live their rent free"

"You are very kind"

"Someone took care of me in a time of my need once," Jean Valjean explained, "and I will do the same. As for you," he said to the other worker, "Watch yourself. The next time I hear of you starting fights with a coworker will be the last time you work in my factory."
