Does the Doctor Dare Wear a Dress? (scientifically then pause for effect 2 seconds)
Doctor Who is a famous British television show that has been running since 1963. It's been quite popular over the years and each season, something has happened! or changed (hand movement) to keep the viewers involved. (Pause 1-2 secs)
The Doctor is continually regenerating in different bodies, he is the same character but with different faces (hand moves in front of face changing of expressions happy/sad). However one (put one finger up) significant thing that has never altered, has been the gender of the Doctor, it is always male, despite the possibility within the character brief for a change of gender to occur. (Pause)
After more than 40 years of Doctor Who, it's time for a change! (put fist up, fist closed). The possibility of a female Doctor has not been explored by the writers, despite how such a dramatic change may boost viewer numbers. (Pause)
A survey conducted by ChevronOne shows that almost 69% of respondents believe that it is possible for the Doctor to have a female incarnation. In the current 2011 season of Doctor Who, the matrix of the Tardis is transported into a human female who then becomes a Time Lord. In response to this occurrence, many viewers showed interest in the possibility of this female (lifts up photo) becoming the next Doctor. (pause)
There are, of course, traditionalists who believe that the Doctor should always remain male, white and skinny. I say, these people have no imagination and therefore have no place watching such scientific fiction as Doctor Who, in the same way as people with no taste buds have no place watching Master Chef. (Pause)
Some people say that the Doctor cannot be female as females do not have the eccentricity required nor the brains for science. (Pause)
Seriously, are these people living in the 1950's? Have these people not learned that females are actually allowed outside of the house now? Many actually have jobs within the scientific community – shock, horror! Having said that, there are, it is true to say, more men than women work within the field of science. The UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology believes that (Pause then Throat clearing) " (Posh voice)making a high profile sci-fi character with a following like Doctor Who female would help to raise the profile of women in science and bring the issue of the important contribution women can and should make to science in the public domain." (Pause)
Many people believe that the Doctor could not be female because although his body changes, the character or personality of the Doctor always remains the same. However, although, thus far, Doctor Who has always had a male body, his personality is not so overtly male that he could not be in a female body. (Pause, sit down, change into aussie bloke type voice) It's not like he sits around all day in his footy shorts, lifts weights, goes surfing and drinks beer. (Pause, stand up) In fact, not many men can multitask like the Doctor, and one of his greatest traits is compassion, a quality commonly seen as feminine. (Pause)
As long as there continues to be snappy writing, and the Doctor's personality does not change, then changing the always white male character to a female would not put off loyal viewers but might attract a few more – especially if she is a particularly good looking female! (Pause)
That is why I believe that the Doctor has a chance of being female. I think there is a chance for the Doctor to be female in the next series, while interest in a female Doctor due to the female Time Lord character, is high. (Pause)
In fact, I believe the Doctor should definitely don a dress!
