It started with a push, cold, lights in his eyes and his own wailing scream of protest. Of course, Hikaru didn't remember his birth, but he remembered never being alone, always being safe in the assurance that Kaoru would always be there with him, and of not, that he would always be waiting for him at the end of his road, wherever he went, he would always return to his twin.
It ended with shrieking wheels, flashing lights and an eardrum cracking cash.
Later, some of those ignorant grown-ups would say that "at least it was over fast", while shaking their heads wistfully. But while a body can die in an instant, the hearts of those who are left with nothing but an empty space where that body used to be, who cannot forget the soul which inhibited it, dies slowly. Of course, some heals in time; some finds other ways to cope.
Hikaru had never been good at coping. Kaoru was always the one who comforted him, who helped him calm down whenever there was something that had managed to upset him. They were safe within each others' arms, in Kaoru's smile he never saw anything but conviction and reassurance that nothing could ever go wrong as long as they had each other to return to.
Well, Hikaru was still waiting. Kaoru never returned to his embrace after that night.
