-1A/N I wrote this for all of my friends who are Meredith and Derek lovers. This is only a one shot. Nothing more. So, for Robyn, Lilla, Laura, Deidre, Jen, Nikki, Carson, and everyone else who loves them, this is for you.
The empty feeling that had settled in the night before had only grown in the hours she had lain in bed next to Cristina. On the floor a white sating gown laid cut to pieces. Therapy, that was what it had been. Shredding what was left of her fairytale. Both their fairytale really. She had laid her chance for happiness on Cristina. If Cristina, Cristina, could obtain the happily ever after then perhaps she had a shot at it herself. She, the surgical princess, had given herself a bit of hope in something that wasn't a scientific fact.
Sighing, she rolls into a sitting position. There was no need to lay there. She had done her duty. She had held Cristina while she sobbed herself into a fitful sleep. Her eyes squint a bit as the first rays of sunlight peek through the blinds. Scooting off the bed, she stares down at the ruined white gown. Cristina had attacked it with a vengeance. Cutting it into ribbons of unrecognizable shreds. 'I should get rid of it,' she thought, toying with one slender silky bit with her toes. She couldn't do it, though. She couldn't pick the remains of the fairytale up and throw them away as though they meant nothing. As though he meant nothing. Her heart twists. It wasn't about the dress anymore, it was about him.
She hadn't meant it, she realized. She wasn't ready for it to be over. If anything, she wanted to be the one to give hope. She wanted to be the one to prove that happily ever after did exist. A slight smile spreads across her face. She wanted her shining knight in whatever. The smile grew bigger as she stepped over the ruined gown.
As she stuffed her feet into a pair of worn flip flops next to the door a slight knock startles her. Twisting the knob, she pulls it open prepared to tell whoever it was to just come back later, or better yet call to see if Cristina wanted company. The words died on her lips as his mouth crushed against her's. Her arms twined up around his neck. She returned the kiss with a desperation she hadn't known she possessed. When he finally released her, she stumbled back a bit, her smile returning. "I was just coming to see you."
He smiled, the smile that always made her heart go flip flop. "Were you now?" She nods. "I'm sorry Meredith. I know I haven't been there. Not the way I should have. I realized that last night. When I thought it was over, when I thought I would never get to hold you in my arms again, tell you how much I love you, all I could think about was whether or not I could have done more. Whether or not I had been there for you like I should have been. And the answer was no. I haven't been. For that I'm so sorry. Sorrier than you will ever know." Her eyes widen as his hand reaches into the pocket of his pants. A small black velvet box emerges. Her heart starts to pound. The pounding increases as he drops down to one knee. "Meredith Grey, I'm asking….no I'm begging…will you do me the honor of being my wife? Will you let me make it up to you for the rest of our lives?"
Through tears she nods. "Yes. Yes Derek, I'll marry you!"
A/N I almost added in a tiny bit about him listening to the evil voice in his head named Shonda, but thought it would ruin what I feel to be a rather sweet little ficlet!
