You Should Be Here

Rizzoli and Isles are the property of TNT and Tess Gerritsen. I'm just borrowing them for some one-shots.

Jane walked into the Dirty Robber with Maura on her arms. A shout went up from across the room where Nina, Frankie, Korsak and her mother were waiting. Agent Jacobs and Agent Charles had just brought a couple of pitchers of beer over to the where they had commandeered a table for a celebration. They had just finished solving a extremely hard case involving a businessman who had faked his death to get out of being prosecuted for the money he had embezzled from a major company in the Boston area. The owners were extremely thankful to the BPD detectives and the FBI as they had not only caught the businessman before he could get away, but they had been able to find the embezzled money through Nina's hard work tracing the elusive money. For once interagency cooperation had went well.

The sound of the of laughter soon filled the Robber. Jane watched as Frankie pulled Maura onto the dance floor and Agent Jacobs grabbed Nina's hand twirling her out for a spin as Korsak sat down next to Jane.

"Nice piece of investigative work. I don't think I have ever seen two agencies work so well." Korsak stated as he watched Maura laughing with Frankie.

"Yeah, Nina did a great job. She's as tenacious as they come when hunting down a lead." Jane replied taking a hit off her beer as her thoughts slid to a missing component in their grouping.

"She would have given Frost a run for his money." Korsak's voice hitched in reply. Just then the song on the jukebox changed to Cole Swindell's 'You Should Be Here.'

"Yeah." Jane's whispered reply reminded Korsak too late of the sore spot still. "I'll be back in a sec. I need a breath of air." Jane rose abruptly and moved off toward the side alley door to the Robber. The music drifted out the side door of the bar as Jane leaned against the building wall. "...You'd be taking way too many pictures on your phone, showing them off to everybody that you know back home, And even some you don't. Yeah they say you're in a better place and I would be too if I could see your face..'

Moments in time with Frost hit her like a panoramic slide show as she closed her eyes...busting through a suspect's door...watching as he rearranged Maura's instruments quietly as Jane distracted her with an argument about some stupid piece of information...then watching as said medical examiner figured out what they had done and banned them from the lab for a week...Jane's laughter bubbled up...watching as Frost quietly slipped Jane's mother a special gift on her birthday...

Suddenly, Jane felt the gentle, warm hands of the medical examiner's wrap around her waist and touch her face as the soft strains of the song strengthened from the door opening.."You should be here, standing with your arms around me here. Cutting up, cracking a cold beer, saying cheers, hey y'all it's sure been a good year. It's one of those moments, that's got you name written all over it…" Jane's eyes fluttered open even as a few tears escaped.

"Sorry, I just…" Jane began even as soft fingers touched her lips silencing her words. The detective could see the understanding in Maura's eyes.

"I know..me too." Maura whispered pulling Jane into a hug. Jane took a shuddering breath as she absorbed the comfort given by her love and returned it in equal measure. Slowly, she reigned in her control and softly pulled out of the hug. She kissed Maura on the lips and smiled giving a gentle squeeze of reassurement. Jane wrapper her arm around Maura and led them back into the Dirty Robber where life went on.
