Spoilers: Everything!
Summary: Even with a world tilted on it's axis he was still her safe haven
Myka Bering felt her knees give way and what was left of the Warehouse start to spin. Her ears were ringing and her heart pounding.
Even through that she heard Pete's sneakered feet against the cement as he scrambled to catch her.
With her partner's arms around her Myka slipped into oblivion.
**********
Pete gently lowered Myka to the ground. She'd scared the hell out of him for a minute.
For a split second he thought she'd been more seriously injured in the explosion than she'd let on.
Now as he knelt next to his partner he was weirdly grateful that she'd just fainted.
Grateful because he wasn't sure how much more he could take.
If he'd lost Myka as well…..
Pete shook off the dark thoughts and sat down his back to an overturned crate. He gently pulled Myka onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her.
His stunned mind struggled to put together a reason for what had just happened.
The thoughts were all jumbled….tangled.
Possibilities, theories…..nothing made sense.
The things that did make sense he didn't want to comprehend.
Pete placed a gentle hand on Myka's right cheek. "Come on, Myka….wake up….need you to wake up. World's gone crazy….our part of it anyway…."
********
From a great distance Myka heard her partner's voice. She fought against the comforting blackness.
Everything was confusing but she could tell he needed her.
Using the last of her strength Myka forced her eyes open.
It took a lot more effort than it should have.
The overhead lights of the warehouse swam and she blinked to bring them into focus.
"Hey."Pete greeted his voice scratchy and hoarse as he shifted so he could see her face. "You okay?"
"Think so."Myka replied quietly as she gingerly sat up.
"Easy."Pete cautioned as he kept one arm around her shoulders.
Myka's gaze was fixed on the door and the gaping hole beyond where the tunnel should be.
"How?"Myka asked her voice trailing to a whisper. How could things go from such a high to such a low so fast.
"We'll figure it out."Pete promised as wrapped his left arm around her shoulders pulling her back towards him.
Myka allowed herself to sink into his warmth.
To let that warmth ward off the dark memories, the loss.
The family they had constructed here over the past six months was gone.
Destroyed.
"Pete?"
"Yeah?"
"Promise me something."
"Anything."
"Promise that we'll get MacPherson no matter what."
Pete tightened his hold. "There won't be a rock the bastard can slither under."
For now, in his arms, in her safe haven, Myka believed Pete.
Believed that they'd get justice for Artie.
It was the only thing keeping her sane.
Pete rested his head on top of Myka's.
He knew they had to find a way out.
Had to locate Leena and Claudia.
They also needed a moment to heal.
"We'll get MacPherson and throw him in the darkest hole there is."Pete vowed quietly. "Then we'll make sure the warehouse stays open….continue what Artie started."
After several long minutes Myka untangled herself from Pete's arms. She slowly stood and offered him a hand up.
In the distance they could hear sirens.
"It'll still be awhile for them to find a way in."Myka commented as she headed towards the back of the warehouse. "There are four emergency exits. Hopefully one wasn't damaged."
"What chapter was that?"Pete asked in a futile attempt to lighten the mood.
"Three."Myka replied automatically as she reached back for her partner's hand. "Come on."
Pete knew the future was as dark and uncertain as it ever had been.
But with Myka by his side they'd be able to face whatever came.
