Sachiko Yagami stared outside the window, watching the rain make intricate designs against the cold glass. A bright streak of lightning made her close her eyes, the pattern burned into her retinas. The flash was immediately followed by a deep roll of thunder.
She brought her hands up to her face and cupped it with them, her thumbs brushing away the tears before they fell.
The thunder reminded her of a bomb. The lightning reminded her of death.
How could life be so unfair as to take Soichiro away from her? Without even one last word? Had she told him 'I love you,' one last time? Her memory fades, and she couldn't remember what the last thing she had said to him was.
Mother had warned her not to marry a police officer, but how do you turn down who you know is your true love? She had had other suitors, but she couldn't imagine a life with any of them after meeting Soichiro.
And then Light…oh, where had she gone wrong? What did she do to him for him to turn out like that?
"I mustn't think like that," She whispered to herself, "It wasn't me, everything that happened was his choice." She had repeated that to herself since hearing about Light being Kira. But it didn't seem to matter, she couldn't seem to get passed that it wasn't her fault.
But where had it gone wrong? When had he changed even though it felt like he had never changed?
Sachiko hugged herself, letting the tears fall freely now.
Why was she still here? After so many members of her family had died, why is she still alive?
Why?
"Mom?" A soft voice said behind Sachiko. The old woman turned to see her daughter entering the room. "Mom, you shouldn't have the lights off, it's not good for your eyes…" Sayu turned on the solitary lamp sitting on Sachiko's nightstand.
Sayu. She didn't even know her brother had been Kira.
"Mom? Are you okay?" She asked. Sayu had recovered from her shock over a span of time, but she still would sometimes sit in a corner of the room and stare blankly at nothing.
Sachiko managed one of her old smiles, "Yes, I'll be fine."
Sayu crossed the room slowly, wrapping her arms around her mother. They stood like that for a while.
That was right, Sayu, that was why she was still here. Sayu still needed her.
She could stay for her daughter; she could stay and nurture her until she was completely well again. She yearned for that day. A spark of happiness resounded somewhere in her. There was still hope for Sayu, and Sachiko wanted to be there for whatever happened.
That's why she was here.
For Sayu.
