Hi! I'm Wolf of the Black Rose. This is my first fanfiction so please go easy on me.
Sakura: Hey, don't forget me!
Oh, right. This is Sakura, a dark angel and my dark half.
Sakura: *Waves*
Okay this is a GX story with some elements of X-Men and Glee in it.
Sakura: That's an odd combination, but then again we're here to break norms.
Amen! But before we start, disclaimers and claimers are a must. Sakura…
Sakura: I'm on it. Wolf doesn't own GX, X-Men, or Glee. If she did, Jaden and Jesse would be together and Finn wouldn't have died. She also doesn't own any music featured in the story. She only owns her OC's. Any elements of Avengers seen are property of their creators. Also, Jaden's going to be a little smarter and Chazz will have a few vulnerable moments.
Both: Here we go! Enjoy!
Chapter 1: New duelists with Secrets
Welcome to Domino City, home of some of the most famous duelists in the world. It's also home to the Kaiba Dome where the next generation of duelists try out to get into the best dueling school in the world: Duel Academy.
Meanwhile in the city, a young duelist was on his way to do just that. The only problem was that he was running late, thanks to the fact his siblings and parents forgot to wake him up. He was currently tearing through the streets, trying to get to the dome before the exams were over.
He had short, almost puffy brown hair with a light brown top and brown eyes. He was wearing a black school uniform with a red t-shirt and red and white sneakers. He was currently muttering over what he had and possibly killing his brother and sister, who were also going to Duel Academy.
"All right! I've got my deck, I've got my gear, and I've got about two minutes to get to the Duel Academy entrance exams before they start! I still can't believe Hex and Robin didn't wake me up! When I get my hands on them, they are seriously in for a world of hurt! Oh well, at least since I'm not a student yet they can't throw me in detention hall for being late." Jaden joked as he continued to run, dodging pedestrians who stared after him as he went.
A little way up ahead, a familiar figure with tri-colored spiky hair was walking toward the Kaiba Dome when he heard footsteps running toward him.
"Heads up!" shouted Jaden causing the figure to stop and turn. He tried to stop, but he was going too fast and ended up running into the figure and falling backwards with his cards scattering on the ground from the impact.
Groaning a bit, he turned to pick up his cards, making sure they weren't damaged. "Sorry!" He said, not completely looking at the person he ran into until he spoke.
"Running a little late, Jaden?" The person asked with humor in his voice. Jaden finally turned around to see the person he ran into was Yugi Muto, the King of Games himself!
"Yugi!" He greeted with a big smile, knowing the king through his friend Sophia, who was his daughter.
The Duel King was wearing his old school uniform which miraculously still fit with a neck belt, wrist guards, and two belts. His hair was still the same, black with purple tips and gold bangs, but face and eyes were sharper than they were when he was a teen.
"You could say that. My family forgot to get me up for the entrance exams so I'm running a bit behind." Jaden explained.
Yugi smiled sympathetically while sneaking his hand into his deck and pulling out a card. "You don't say."
As Jaden got up from picking up his cards, Yugi held out the card for him to take. "Why don't you take this? Something tells me it will serve you well in your upcoming duel."
Jaden was stunned. Yugi had given him cards from the card shop before, but this card was straight from Yugi's deck.
"For real?" He asked as he took the card, still having a hard time believing that Yugi was giving him this card. He was so busy staring at it that he didn't notice Yugi was starting to walk away until he spoke again.
"Good luck." Yugi said as he walked past Jaden.
"Oh wait, thank you, Yugi. I'll make everyone proud. Me and the team." Jaden said and bowed in respect.
Yugi stopped, gave Jaden his signature thumbs up, and walked away.
Jaden looked back at the card he was given. It was called Winged Kuriboh. It looked like the original Kuriboh only with little white wings. Jaden could instantly tell that it was special. Suddenly, he hears a soft 'coo' sound, startling him.
'What was that?' Jaden wondered as he looked around for the source of the sound. As he did, he saw the time on the clock and panicked.
"Uh oh, the exams!" He exclaimed and took off running, putting the card into his deck case. "I can't be the next King of Games if I'm late to the games!"
Kaiba Dome
The dome was filled with duelists. Some were already students while others were eager applicants ready to get into Duel Academy.
"Once again, all Duel Academy applicants who have passed their duel entrance exams, please proceed to registration. For those haven't better luck next year." said a slightly monotone voice over the PA system.
'Yes and have fun at Duel Monsters community college.' Thought a very snide individual sitting with the teachers.
This person had a long blond ponytail, beady little eyes, and pale skin. Even sitting down, he was a tall and skinny individual. While the text says male, that is debated because he's wearing purple lipstick and his obelisk teacher's uniform had pink ruffles. This is Dr. Crowler, head of the Obelisk Blue dorm and vice chancellor of Duel Academy. He is not a nice person.
On one field, the procter summoned a monster that looked like a purple caterpillar with huge pincers and attacked his opponent directly, said opponent being a kid with light blue hair and silver eyes with glasses wearing a blue school uniform.
'Oh man, I can barely concentrate with all these academy kids staring at me, judging me. Oh what I wouldn't give to already be enrolled in the school like they are.' Thought the kid as he looked up nervously at the students watching the duels.
At another field stood another kid facing his procter. This kid had black hair in the same style as Jaden's hair and brown eyes like his too. His skin was pale, stood about 5'5 and had a sleek build. He was wearing a white hoodie over a gray tank top, black jeans, and black converse. He also wore a black collar with silver pyramid studs and gray fingerless gloves. His name is Leon Yuki, though if you're smart you'll call him Hex.
On his field he had Gemini Elf in attack mode with a face down and his life points were at 3800. His opponent had just summoned his Soul Tiger in defense mode to protect his 3100 life points. It was now Hex's turn.
"I draw!" Hex said, drawing his card. He looked at it and then put it in his hand.
"I activate my facedown, Magical Dimension." A gold and black coffin appeared.
"By sacrificing my Gemini Elf, I can bring out another Spellcaster monster." The coffin drew in the elves and closed.
"Now, I bring out my Chaos Command Magician!" The coffin reopened itself releasing a blue skinned spellcaster. The monster wore dark green robes and hood with a scepter of the same color with a red spherical jewel. (2400/1900)
"Now for the second effect of my spell. It can take out your only monster!" The coffin gave off a blast that grabbed the tiger and pulled it into the graveyard.
"And since I have yet to normal summon I'll bring out my Magician's Valkyria!" A female magician that looked similar to the Dark Magician Girl appeared, except with a purple skirt and a large scepter with a jeweled hook. (1600/1800)
"Now I'll have both my monsters attack and end this duel!" Both mages crossed their scepters and fired a charged up blast at the procter taking him out.
Procter: 0
Hex: 3800
"Good finisher!" The procter praised. "Welcome to the Academy."
"Thank You." said Hex, bowing.
As he left the field, he looked over at another field to see a girl finishing her duel with a direct attack from her Archlord Kristya. She has short spiky light brown hair, brown eyes, tannish skin, and stands 5'4". She was wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt with black angel wings on the front, and black sneakers. This girl was his sister, Robin.
"Good job, Sis."
Robin turned to look at Hex and smiled. "Thanks, Hex." She said happily as she walked over to him.
They then made their way up the stairs to the stands and over to a small group by the rail. The group consisted of four boys and three girls.
The first boy was 5'8 with a slim build. He had light tan skin, dark red eyes, and short pitch black hair with red highlights. He wore a black tank top, a purple short sleeve hoodie zipped up halfway, red fingerless gloves, ripped gray jeans, and tattered red converse. This is Shadow Kaiba, Seto Kaiba's foster son.
Next to him was a girl about 5'5 and quite skinny. She had straight, strawberry blond hair that reaches all the way down her back and big, sparkly amethyst eyes. She wore a pink halter top, red skinny jeans, sparkling pink high heels, a gold necklace with a heart shaped diamond, and some pink and blue bracelets on both her wrists. She's Sophia Muto-Devlin, the daughter of Yugi and Duke.
Next is Ares Pegasus, the youngest son of Maximillion Pegasus. He has tannish skin, long dark honey blond hair that goes down to the middle of his back, and heterochromatic eyes, the left is brown and the right is aqua blue. He wears a simple white t-shirt and blue jeans with blue converse and blue wrist bands.
The second girl of the group was Phoenix Taylor, Tristan Taylor and Serenity Wheeler's daughter. She has tan skin, sky blue eyes, long brown hair with blond streaks, and very lean figure. She was wearing dark blue pants with a matching jacket, a light blue t-shirt, black shoes, and a dark blue Snapback worn backwards.
The third boy of the group was Anokai Wheeler, the son of Joey and Valon Wheeler. He had scruffy blond hair in a similar cut to Joey's and dark crimson eyes. While he has Joey's build, he has Valon's skin tone. He wore blue jeans, a purple t-shirt, black running shoes, and a teal windbreaker.
The last girl of the group was Angel Bakura, Ryou's daughter with Akefia, who was given a second chance at life after the truth of his feelings came out. She had shoulder blade length, curly, brown hair and shiny blue eyes. She has round features giving her a child like appearance and pale skin, which made her look like a porcelain doll. She was also the shortest of the group at about 5'0. She wore blue jeans, sky blue high tops, a blue tank top, and a tight black jacket that was a gift from her dad.
The final member of the group was Ari Ishtar, Marik Ishtar's son. He had dark brown hair with blond streaks in the same style as his dad, naturally deep tanned skin, dark amethyst eyes, and his father's build. He was wearing a black tank top, blue jeans, and black boots.
"Good job, you two." Praised Sophia as the Yuki siblings walked up.
"It was nothing," Hex said simply, but he was smiling. "I just can't shake the feeling we forgot something."
Shadow looked at him and said bluntly. "Here's a hint in the form of a question; Where's Jaden?"
"I don't know." Robin said looking around the auditorium for him. Then it hit her. "Oh my gosh, we forgot to wake him up!"
Hex went a bit pale at that statement, well paler. His brother may seem innocent, but it's all an act. He can be quite sadistic when he wants to be, especially when provoked. He knew that he and Robin were definitely going to be in for it when they got home.
"Last call for all Duel Academy participants." Came the voice over the PA system which caused Hex and Robin to look at each other nervously.
The others just stared at them, half with sympathy and half with mild amusement. They all knew how Jaden could be at times so they knew their fear.
"Boy, I would not want to be their shoes right now." Anokai said with a smile, having suffered Jaden's wrath before.
Meanwhile, outside at the entrance, a man in a dark suit with sunglasses and two girls wearing the Ra Yellow girl's uniform were looking around for any last minute applicants. After a few minutes, the man looked at his watch and made a decision.
"Well ladies, that's it. Mark all the no shows, no shows." He said and the girls started packing up, but they were stopped a very familiar person.
"Wait! I'm here!" A voice shouted.
It came from the guard rail at the end of the parking lot in front of them, which confused them because beyond that as a about an eight foot drop. The tree tops near it started to rustle a bit, and up climbed a certain brunette. With a mighty heave and a flip, Jaden was over the rail and on his feet, breathing hard.
"You can count… Jaden Yuki as present… thank you… just as soon… as I catch my… breath." He said between pants.
After finally catching his breath, Jaden registered and had his deck searched for confiscated cards. Then, he finally went inside.
Back inside, the blue haired kid from earlier had finished his duel and was now watching the duels. Soon a presence came up beside, he looked up and came face to face with Jaden, who was now engrossed in the duels.
"Wow, look at 'em go." He was looking at a duel going on between a boy about his age with blackish gray hair slicked back quite neatly and wearing a grayish-white school uniform and a proctor.
On the proctor's field were Gear Golem the Moving Fortress (800/2200) and Big Shield Guardna (100/2600) both in defense mode. On the teen's field was a Vorse Raider (1900/1200) in attack mode and a face down.
"All right, new guy," The proctor called to the boy. "Multiple choice; you have two monsters starring ya down, do you A: throw in the towel, B: beg for mercy, or C: run home to mamma?"
"I'll go with D: none of the above!" The boy with dark hair announced, revealing to have a British accent, pressing a button on his duel disk to activate his face down.
"A trap?!" The proctor asked, surprised.
"Exactly. You see, with Ring of Destruction I can destroy any monster on the field that's in attack mode and then we both take damage equal to that monster's attack points." The kid stated with a slight smile, knowing he had won.
A ring of red bombs appeared around Vorse Raider's neck and exploded, dropping the boy's life points down to 1300, while the proctor's dropped to the zero.
"Clever move, applicant. Welcome to the academy." The proctor said as the holograms disappeared.
"Thank you, oh wise proctor." The boy said dryly as he bowed.
Up in the stands, three boys wearing Obelisk Blue uniforms were watching the other guy's duel intently.
"Wow, that guy's pretty good, don't ya think Chazz?" The boy with blue hair and glasses said with a slight southern accent.
"Guess the rumors about him being some kind of whiz kid are true, huh Chazz, huh?" The boy on the other side with spiky brown hair asked in a thick voice.
"He's a punk," The person with spiky black hair, known as Chazz said quite snobbishly. "We went to Duel Prep school for the past three years, we're ready for the academy. These kids don't know what they're getting into, but they'll learn. The hard way… the Chazz Princeton way."
What the three preps didn't know was that they had been overheard by the gang, who were sitting only a few seats away.
"Chazz Princeton, huh?" Phoenix said. "No amount of prep school is gonna help if you don't work hard in the arena."
"Too true, Phoenix, but maybe he has actual skill to back up his words." Shadow said, looking at Chazz like he was trying to read his skills by starring.
"I guess… " Phoenix sighed.
She then looked across the room and her face lit up slightly when she saw Jaden. With a smirk, she turned over to Hex and Robin. "Hey, you two, don't look now but the Grim Reaper just showed up."
At that Hex and Robin looked to where she was just looking and went pale when they saw their brother on the other side of the arena. Seeing as how they were both about to freak, Sophia decided to run interference.
"Okay, you two sneak around over to where the teachers are, I'll keep him distracted." She said starting over to where their brave and fearless leader was.
The Yukis didn't need to be told twice and all but ran to that side of the room.
Meanwhile, Jaden was talking with the blue-haired applicant beside him like they knew each other for years. He was also able to sense something in the boy, something he sensed in a small portion of the students in the room.
"Wow, that last guy really tore it up." He said, still admiring Bastion's technique.
"Yeah, Bastion Misawa; they say he got the highest score on the written exam out of all us applicants."
"Wow, I was told I got one of the highest scores."
"I just barely passed, my name's Syrus by the way, nice ta meet you. " Syrus then looked somewhat depressed. "I sorta have a thing where I get test anxiety. I don't know how I won my match."
"So you're in!" Jaden exclaimed patting Syrus on the back. "Congratulations, I'll be in too as soon as I win my duel."
"Wait, you haven't dueled yet?" Syrus asked surprised.
"No." Jaden replied, starting to get the feeling that something was wrong.
"Then you might have a problem, I think this was supposed to be the last one." Syrus explained causing Jaden to face plant on the rail.
He slowly looked up with a look that scared Syrus a little. "Uh… you okay?"
"I'm going to kill those two. I'm about to become the youngest in the family." Jaden muttered under his breath in a disturbingly calm voice with a deadly look on his face.
"Which is why I'm here to run interference." Came a voice decide them, revealing to be Sophia, who had popped up a few moments ago.
Syrus was awed by her beauty while Jaden just turned to glare at her slightly.
"Where are they?" Jaden half growled, looking about ready to kill.
Sophia just smiled and shook her head, a clear sign that she was not going to tell. Jaden just sighed and smiled a little, no one stay mad around Sophia for long. Syrus just continued to stare at her until Sophia noticed him.
"Hello, I'm Sophia Muto." Sophia said politely extending a hand which Syrus took slightly shaky.
"I-I-I'm Syrus." He said nervously. Then it registered what she said her last name was and he started to shake even more.
Seeing this, she and Jaden started to laugh a bit. "Yes, I'm one of those Mutos." She said smiling a bit, before turning her head back over to Jaden who went back to moping. "Jaden don't worry, you will get the chance to duel."
"I hope so." Jaden sighed. He then sees Shadow heading over to the booth where the proctors were and perked up a bit, thinking that things were going to be okay.
At the booth where the faculty was sitting, everyone was talking about the new students.
"Looks like we've got a pretty good crop this year." One of them said.
"Yes, indeed." Another agreed.
Crowler just sat there, not really paying attention to the other teacher's talk. He was about to get up and leave when…
"I'm sorry to interrupt," The man from out front appeared stopping Crowler from leaving. "But one last applicant has arrived to take his exam, Mr. Crowler."
"Did you just call me, 'mister'?" Crowler asked with almost a scowl.
"Oh, I'm sorry," The man apologized. "I'm new here Mrs… "
Before he could continue, Crowler interrupted him. "I have a PhD in dueling to earn the title 'doctor' thank you."
If there's one thing about Crowler, he takes his title seriously with what he has accomplished. He then looked away. "Now tell the truant that he'll have to come back next year."
The other teachers looked at him like he lost his mind. They didn't even notice Shadow approaching them.
"Oh come on, Dr. Crowler, we have time for one more."
"Yes, let's give the duelist his shot."
As they pleaded with him, Dr. Crowler looked like he was reaching the end of his rope.
"He was just a bit late, that's all."
That did it.
"LATE IS RUDE!" He slammed his hands down, causing the other people around him to jump, along the with the terrified brother and sister hiding in the row above them. "I have no time for slackers!"
That comment irked the young Kaiba and caused the other two Yukis to bristle. Shadow chose moment to make his entrance, before Hex did something bad.
"Excuse me." He said when he reached the teachers.
They looked at him and nearly stood at attention like soldiers. They knew their boss's kid when they saw him. Crowler was especially nervous, wondering how long he had been standing there.
"Oh, Mr. Kaiba, to what do we owe the pleasure?" He asked, changing his tone to a pleasant one.
"Just giving an update for Chancellor Sheppard and my father, telling them that everything is running smoothly," Shadow said. "We wouldn't want a repeat of what happened last year."
That made Crowler a bit uneasy as he remembered what happened, also surprised that the Kaiba heir even knew about that. "When you cut a third of the applicants because someone called you 'Mr.' or 'Mrs.' or some other ridiculous reason? Just giving you a reminder to give everyone a fair shot."
With that warning, Shadow turned to go, but then stopped and turned to say one more thing. "By the way, that "truant" as you called him is a friend of mine and I would appreciate it if he got his chance."
With that, Shadow turned and walked away with a smile on his face. He loved to mess with Crowler.
"Yes, of course. Little brat!" Crowler said before scowling. 'Doesn't he and his father realize that there are enough talentless flunkies at this academy? But he's the boss's boy who can tell the boss, and if he wants to give this scrim shaker a duel… fine.'
He then got up from his seat. "Pardon me, gentlemen, I'll be right back."
But before he could go any further, one of the teachers picked up a box full of duel monster decks. "But uh, who's going to be the boy's dueling proctor and which exam deck shall we use?"
Crowler just huffed and walked away. "Leave that to me." He said mysteriously.
Back with Jaden, Syrus, and Sophia, Bastion had come up from his duel to sit down in the row in front of them. Sophia took the time to look him over. To her eye, Bastion was slender with some muscle that seem to be built for speed more than strength. His hair was grayish-black was slicked back but seemed to have no gel holding it back. His eyes are what seemed to grab her the most, a stormy gray almost silver to her. The accent he had was a bonus. All in all, he was pretty handsome.
"That was a great duel, Bastion." She said leaning on the rail.
Jaden was looking at Bastion too, but he was looking deeper, feeling the same pulse he felt from Syrus.
Bastion turned to Sophia, seeing her for the first time. "Thank you." He said politely, turning away and blushing lightly.
Jaden then stepped into the conversation. "From the looks of it, you just might be the second best duelist here."
This surprised both Bastion and Syrus, but before they could ask, a voice came over the PA system. "Jaden Yuki, please report to exam field four."
"Looks like Shadow pulled through." Sophia stated, smiling at the excited look on Jaden's face.
"I owe Shadow huge for this. Wish me luck, guys." He said as he got ready to go.
"Hey, wait," Bastion interrupted him, "If I'm the second best, who's first?"
Jaden pointed to himself. "Yours truly," He said with a confident smirk. "It's what I'm best at."
He then continued down the stairs, but not before flashing a peace sign to Sophia, who got the message.
"Say guys, you want to come sit with the rest of the gang and me." The Game Princess asked.
Startled by the question, both boys looked at each other before nodding a yes. They made their way over to the rest of the gang, now including Hex and Robin who figured it was safe to come back.
"Hey, guys," She greeted the others, who all turned to her noticing the two unknown boys behind her. "This is Syrus and Bastion."
After introducing them, the three sat down with the rest of the gang, Sophia and Bastion sitting together, and Syrus standing next to Angel, and the introductions continued.
"Hi, I'm Robin and this is my brother, Leon, but he insists on being called Hex." Robin introduced, motioning to her brother, who nodded a greeting.
"I'm Shadow, and you already met Sophia."
"My name's Ares."
"Name's Phoenix."
"My name's Anokai."
"My name's Angel."
"And my name's Ari."
"Nice to meet all of you." Syrus said shyly.
"I see that you guys already met our brother." Hex said watching as Jaden reached the duel field.
Bastion and Syrus both nodded, surprised to see that these were the guys that Jaden had looked ready to kill earlier.
Syrus turned back to the field to watch Jaden. "He's so sure of himself, I wonder if he's really that good." He wondered.
"Oh, he is that good Syrus," Robin said, gesturing to the others. "We've all dueled him at least twice, and none of us have beaten him, and some of us are children of pro duelists."
"Either way, he's going to need to be," Bastion said, looking at the exam field in question. "Look who he's dueling."
Down on the field was none other than Dr. Crowler.
"Whoa, who's she?" asked Anokai looking down at the field.
"He is Dr. Crowler; he's in charge of the exams." Bastion replied.
"He's also the head of the top dorm at Duel Academy." Shadow added, with a slight grimace. He felt like his family's history was being insulted by this guy and what that dorm had become.
"Whoa! That's a dude!" Anokai shouted.
"Very." Bastion said.
"Say, what's up with the gear? Looks more like a guitar than a duel disk." Ares asked, noticing the strange vest.
"It's a duel vest. They're mostly used by teachers. They were one my dad's earlier duel disks. They worked, but they were a pain to carry around, hence the duel disks used nowadays." Shadow explained.
"Hey, the duel's about the start." Angel said, as Jaden's platform came up on the field across from Crowler.
"Alright, test time!" Crowler said looking at Jaden very confidently. "So, son, your name?"
Jaden stood at attention like a soldier and replied. "Jaden, Jaden Yuki."
"Well, Jaden Yuki, I'm Doctor Vellian Crowler, Department Chair and Techniques Professor here at Duel Academy."
"So I'm dueling a teacher for my exam." Jaden said. "And here I thought you were the school mascot."
Crowler sweat dropped, while Jaden smirked. The gang either giggled or smiled a bit at Jaden's joke.
"Now that he mentions it..." The boy wearing glasses next to Chazz said.
"This guy's got some lip, huh, Chazz?" The other said.
Chazz, on the other hand, didn't look happy at what Jaden was saying down there.
Crowler activated his duel vest and drew his five cards while Jaden activated his duel disk and drew his five cards. He was curious about the doctor's disk because Shadow told him the same story he just told the guys, so he was wondering why people used those.
Crowler just acted like this duel was going to be a quick one. Jaden could feel his arrogance and knew this was going to be a short but interesting duel.
"Well, I'm ready!" Jaden said. "Time to throw down."
"So, let's duel!" Both players shouted.
Crowler: 4000
Jaden: 4000
"Here goes." Jaden said as he drew his first card and looked at his hand.
"Okay, I'm going to summon Elemental Hero Avian in defense mode!" As he placed the card horizontally on the field, a green bird man appeared and knelt on its card image (1000/1000).
"I'll also throw down a facedown." The image of a facedown card appeared on Jaden's field.
"Alright, Jaden's going for the old scout and report technique!" Robin exclaimed.
"Huh?" Syrus asked, not getting the phrase.
"I believe she means Jaden started his move like that so he can see how his opponent plays to find his weaknesses." Bastion explained.
"And it's hard to rock a deck like the Elemental Heroes properly. It requires more strategy than most people realize. Jaden's been perfecting that deck since he was seven." Sophia added.
"Alright teach, get your game on!" Jaden said confidently.
"Yes, of course. Don't tell me what to do!" Crowler said dismissively, muttering that last part as he drew his card. He then took a look at his hand. 'After all, since I'm using my own personal deck rather than one of those puny test decks, I'll be calling all the shots. I'll fail this miserable little brat and send him home in no time.'
He grinned as he saw the cards in his hand. "I'll start my turn by playing the spell card Confiscation!"
"Okay, that's not good." Jaden stated.
"No, it's not. What it does is allow me to pay 1000 life points to take a look at your hand and then send one of your cards to the graveyard." As his explanation finished, holographic images of Jaden's cards appeared. They were Monster Reborn, The Warrior Returning Alive, Hero Signal, and Polymerization.
Crowler: 3000
Jaden: 4000
"Ah yes, I remember some of these from back when I was naive rookie." That comment caused Jaden to scowl.
"Now which one shall I banish?" He looked at each card carefully and made his decision.
"Monster Reborn to the graveyard!" Jaden's Monster Reborn vanished.
"Next, I'll set two cards face down," Two face-downs appeared in front of Crowler and then he took one more card and showed it to Jaden. "And finally, from my hand I play Heavy Storm! This spell card destroys every other spell and trap card that's out on the field."
A heavy wind picked up and Jaden's face-down, Draining Shield, was destroyed along with Crowler's two face-downs. Jaden noticed this immediately.
"You do know that you just destroyed your own cards, right?" Jaden questioned, though inwardly he was trying to figure out the doctor's endgame.
"Now, now, you mustn't speak out-of-turn, young scholar." Crowler countered. After that dark clouds began to form around his side of the field.
Jaden tensed at the sight. "Hey, what's happening?"
"Nothing's happening," Crowler said dismissively before adding, "Not yet!"
Just as he did, two worm-like creatures appeared on his side of the field. "But that's about to change."
The audience was awestruck by these two monsters but Syrus was confused, again. "Could someone tell me what's going on?"
"Those two trap cards that Dr. Crowler had out on the field were called Statue of the Wicked," Bastion explained as he observed the duel. "It's a special trap card that creates a vicious monster token when it's destroyed by a card effect. That's why he played Heavy Storm."
"And speaking of Heavy Storm, I don't think that's a test deck." Ares deduced.
"Why's that?" Syrus asked.
"Of course! And that goes the same for a card like Confiscation; they're both rare cards that can change the tide of the battle without any serious costs!" Bastion realized.
"Meaning?" Anokai asked.
"It's probably his main deck!" Phoenix answered.
"Why am I not surprised?" Shadow sighed.
They weren't the only ones to come to that conclusion.
"A card that strong couldn't be any of the test decks, Crowler must be using his own." Torimaki, the boy with glasses, said.
"Then this duel's over," Raizou, the other boy, said. "No one can best the deck of an expert like Dr. Crowler."
"Yeah, it's impossible don't ya think, Chazz?" Torimaki asked.
"Yeah, what do you think, Chazz?" Raizou joined.
Chazz grinned at this. "I think I'm going to enjoy watching Crowler mop the floor with our mouthy little friend down there. I just wish they had treated all the other second-rate duelists that applied to this academy the same way."
Up above the boys were another couple of individuals who were watching the duels. A girl with sandy blond hair that ended at her upper back with grayish-brown eyes and wearing the standard Obelisk Blue girl's uniform. Her name is Alexis Rhodes.
The other was a taller boy with blue hair, that went down to the bottom of his neck but had some bangs near his blue eyes. He was also in Obelisk Blue like Alexis and Chazz, but his uniform was more white than blue. His name was Zane Truesdale, a senior and top student at Duel Academy.
"What an elitist snob," Alexis said. "Bullying some amateur with his very best cards."
"You're too soft, Alexis." Zane said. "I just hope we get to see that legendary rare monster Crowler has stashed away in that deck of his."
"Ready for your next lesson?" Crowler called to Jaden form his side of the field.
Jaden just flashed his trademark grin. "Bring it on!"
Crowler regarded this negatively. "Very well."
His monsters then started to glow and writhing in flames. "And now I sacrifice my two Wicked Tokens to summon my ultimate creature. Come forth, Ancient Gear Golem!"
In place of Crowler's worm-like creatures stood a giant robotic monster that had many of its gears showing. Again the audience members were awed by the sight of the monster, mainly because of its stats (3000/3000).
"There it is, that's his legendary rare card!" Alexis gasped.
"Now it looks we're going to find out what makes it so legendary." Zane said as he observed the duel.
"Whoa, that monster could easily stand toe-to-toe with Blue-Eyes White Dragon!" Ari shouted.
"It could try, but it's either me or my dad we'd be talking about, so all bets are off." Shadow said.
Angel giggled at that.
"Now, now, I hope you're not too scared of my legendary Ancient Gear Golem." Crowler said sarcastically towards Jaden.
Jaden just smirked, knowing Crowler had walked right into his trap. He had seen all he needed to see. "I've stared down a Blue-Eyes White Dragon and a Dark Magician, your monster doesn't scare me."
This shocked many people, including Syrus. "Either Jaden's brave or he's not!"
Hex laughed. "We sometimes think he's both, but either way Jaden's got this."
"He's staring down that legendary rare monster like he doesn't have a care in the world," Zane said, incredulously. "I guess youth and inexperience have its benefits."
"Give it a rest, Zane," Alexis said. "At least the kid's showing some backbone. Plus, if what he said was true he may have more experience than we realize."
"Even if that's the case, there won't be much of it to show after this."
Dr. Crowler cackled as he gave his orders. "Golem attack, Mechanized Melee!"
His Ancient Gear Golem's red mono-eye glowed slightly before pulling back its fist and punched Jaden's Avian to pieces.
"Oh man, Jaden's monster didn't stand a chance! Its defense points were way too low," Syrus complained as his shoulder slumped. "This doesn't look good."
"And it's about to get worse," Bastion said, remembering what he knew about Ancient Gear Golem. "When Ancient Gear Golem attacks a monster in defense mode, the difference between its attack points and the defending monster's defense points are dealt to the opponent as damage."
"But that would mean Jaden's life points are gonna take a hit!" Syrus cried as he realized what was going on.
Just as Syrus said that, a transparent version of Ancient Gear Golem's fist slammed through Jaden's body, causing to cry out slightly as if in pain.
Hex tensed and Robin cringed. They were practically restraining themselves from rushing down there to help their brother. The triplets were really close no matter what happened.
Jaden: 2000
Crowler: 3000
"Yeesh, down to half with one blow," Anokai winced. "He's gonna have to go on the offense, quick."
Crowler decided to end his turn. "I believe that will do for now."
He noticed that Jaden was trying regain his breath. "Now don't feel bad," He taunted. "Not everyone has the talent to be professional. If you want to give up feel free."
Jaden just gave a confident smirk. "One problem with that teach, I don't know how to give up."
Just as he drew his next card, he heard a faint cooing sound. He paused before drawing the card and taking a look at it. It was Winged Kuriboh. He then remembered what Yugi said to him when he gave him the card. 'I'm starting to believe that.'
Then, whether it was his imagination or not, he thought he saw the card wink at him! After the surprise wore off, he made his decision. 'I'm going to take that as a sign to play you. Yeah, this will work.'
"Okay, I summon Winged Kuriboh in defense mode." A small furry creature with green paws and angel wings appeared (300/200).
Sophia perked up at the sight. She recognized that card and knew only one person who would give it to Jaden.
"Next, I play one card face-down. Not bad, huh, teach?"
"Looks like Jay's safe for now." Shadow commented.
"What do you mean?" Syrus asked, confused as ever.
"Wait and see."
Crowler simply laughed at this. "No, not bad, but you must understand that I'm a master technician," He teased Jaden. "A Kuriboh to me is rather pedestrian; even one with wings, its defense points are still no match for my Ancient Gear Golem. It's a textbook mistake, don't feel bad. Now let's proceed."
He then drew his next card. "Now, Ancient Gear Golem, attack that Kuriboh with Mechanized Melee!" Again the monster struck, smashing the tiny monster to pieces.
Jaden cringed. 'Sorry, Winged Kuriboh.'
But Dr. Crowler noticed that Jaden's life points hadn't dropped. "Check your gear, your life points haven't changed."
But Jaden just smiled. "My gear's fine," He replied. "On the turn Winged Kuriboh's destroyed, I take zero damage."
This information took Crowler by surprise. Some of the audience members were stunned that Crowler didn't know this.
"How 'bout that," Alexis said as she watched. "A technique the good doctor didn't know."
"No one can be expected to know every technique, Alexis," Zane stated. "Especially one as obscure as that."
"Yeah, well that kid sure knew it." She countered with a slight smile.
Sophia laughed at Crowler's reaction. "People really need to stop underestimating Kuribohs!"
"Fine, fine, I guess you lame little monster saved you there." Crowler taunted as Jaden put Winged Kuriboh into his graveyard.
"Whoa, slow down there, teach!" Jaden shot back, now really annoyed with this guy. "Just because you beat him doesn't give you the right to call him lame!"
"Oh, yes, I forgot how you new duelists get attached to your monsters," Crowler taunted again. "I'm sorry."
"Show a little respect, why don't ya?" Ares muttered, the rest of the gang agreeing.
"You're going to be," Jaden said as he pressed a button on his duel disk. "Because by attacking Winged Kuriboh you set off my trap card, one of my favorites too, Hero Signal!"
As his trap activated, a spotlight with a unique "H" symbol appeared on the ceiling. "And that lets me bring out another Elemental Hero."
As a card shot out from his deck into his hand, he placed the card on the duel tray. "Go, Elemental Hero Burstinatrix!" From a column of red flames, a gray-skinned woman in a red body-suit appeared and landed on the field (1200/800).
"Now, it's my turn!" He then looked over his cards again. "Alright, Winged Kuriboh, it's revenge time!"
He placed one of his cards into his spell/trap zone. "First, I'll bring Avian back to my hand using the spell card The Warrior Returning Alive." The card came out of the graveyard slot.
"And now, I'll summon him to join the fight!" After Jaden played Avian again, it reappeared next to the fire heroine.
"Oh, okay, another amateurish mistake, but this is good, this is good, now would anyone like to tell me what our little friend did wrong here…" Crowler began to taunt, but was interrupted by Jaden.
"I wasn't done," He said. "You seem to forget where my Elemental Heroes' powers lie. They show their true strength when they stand together as one, as in a fusion summon."
He took a card from his hand and showed Crowler. "And I just so happen to have a Polymerization right here."
The two Elemental Heroes leapt up into the air and started to swirl together as Polymerization activated. "Heroes unite!"
After the two monsters were done, a new monster appeared that had the same looks as Burstinatrix and Avian. It had one of Avian's wings with Burstinatirx's colors. The only truly unique feature was the monster's left arm was a dragon-like head (2100/1200). "And here he is, Elemental Hero Flame Wingman! I hope your Golem's ready for a clash of the titans!"
"Looks like Jaden's done pulling punches, he's ready to end this." Phoenix said confidently.
"I must say, you're dueling quite well for an amateur, but next time try summoning a monster with more attack points than what's already out." Crowler said with a little disappointment in his voice as he didn't consider the fusion monster a threat.
"What does he mean?" Syrus asked looking at Jaden's monster.
"He means that the Wingman's attack points are lower than the Golem's attack points," Bastion answered. "A shame too, because that Elemental Hero has a powerful effect."
"Relax, guys," Anokai spoke up. "Jaden's got this duel in the bag."
"He's right," Angel said with a smile. "If we're right about that last card in Jaden's hand, then this duel is over."
"You really shouldn't have underestimated me doc, that was your biggest mistake. The second biggest was mocking my deck!" Jaden replied as he took the card he drew at the start of the turn and opened the field spell slot.
"It only takes one card to change the tide of a duel and I've got that card right here," He then placed the card in the field spell slot. "I activate the field spell, Skyscraper!"
After he played the card, buildings that you would see in places like New York City, literally, sprouted up from the field. In the middle of it, Crowler's Golem looked like a monster attacking the city. Meanwhile, Jaden's Flame Wingman was perched on top of the steeple of the highest building, it's arms crossed. The team was anticipating Jaden's next move.
"Alright, Flame Wingman," Jaden called out. "Time to save the city, attack that Ancient Gear Golem!"
After he announced that, Flame Wingman jumped from the building it stood on and dove towards Crowler's monster.
"Fine by me, bring him on," Crowler said as though he wasn't worried. "This silly little Skyscraper field spell hasn't lower my Golem's attack by one points!"
Flame Wingman then landed on the pavement in front of the Ancient Gear Golem before leaping up into the air again.
"Once again, you underestimate me and insult my cards, and that will be your undoing, teach," Jaden stated. "This field spell wasn't to weaken your monster but to strengthen mine. In the Heroes' city, when an elemental Hero attacks a monster that's stronger than itself, it's attack points increase by a grand total of 1000!"
"Wait! Timeout!" Crowler cried but he couldn't stop Flame Wingman's attack as it launched itself at the Ancient Gear Golem, its body covered in flames (3100/1200).
Crowler was completely freaking out as Jaden's monster collided with his, destroying it. "No, it can't be! He was my very best card!" He cried before a piece of debris hit him in the head.
Flame Wingman landed in front of its master.
"Oh, I forgot to mention my Wingman's special ability," Jaden spoke up. "When Wingman destroys a monster in battle, the attack points of that monster are dealt as damage to your life points. Looks like this duel is mine."
Just as he said that, the shell of Ancient Gear Golem fell on top of Crowler burying him in its pieces.
Jaden: 2000
Crowler: 0
"That's game!" Jaden announced as he pointed his index and middle finger at Crowler in a sort of salute. "So, it looks like I'm going to be a new student here after all, huh teach?"
As the holograms faded, a lot of people were actually stunned to see that Jaden actually beat a teacher who was using his own deck. Crowler was in near complete shock. He had been beaten by a kid who was late and who, in his eyes, was a mere amateur!
"Impossible," He seethed. "There's no way that this delinquent could beat me!"
Up in the stands, Chazz was having the same thought. "It must be dumb luck," He said through clenched teeth. "No way Crowler would lose to some flunky!"
Alexis was smiling as Jaden's victory. "This kid's definitely got a future here."
Zane just huffed and walked away.
Syrus was cheering for Jaden himself. "Yeah! Jaden won!"
"Way to play, Jay!" Angel cheered along with him.
"Heck yeah! Wish I had that kind of action during my duel!" Ari added.
'Well played,' Bastion mused as he watched Jaden wave to the audience. 'I could use some competition.'
After waving a bit, Jaden took out Winged Kuriboh card he got earlier. "We made it," He said. "From here on out Kuriboh, you're my partner. Looks like I finally found my own spirit partner."
Again, Jaden could've sworn he heard Winged Kuriboh coo and wink at him, and he might just be right.
Later that night, at the Kaiba mansion
It was quiet at the mansion, with only the lights inside showing that anyone was up. The kids were in a room that looked like a music studio, minus Bastion and Syrus, discussing moves to the Academy. What no one at the school knew was that, they were a band called the Rogue Warriors, so they needed a place to practice when they got to the Academy.
"So, here's the plan," Jaden stated, while he sat in a chair. "We bring our instruments with us to Duel Academy and have Shadow's dad ship over the equipment later that night. Shadow, you said you know a place on the island where we can practice unseen and unheard?"
Shadow nodded, sitting on amplifier with as a pair of real black wings on his back. "Okay, we have that taken care of. Now we have to deal with the other matter of our group."
What Jaden means is that they are mutants and a super team called the Guardians. The Chancellor was the only one who knew of this and the group could possibly grow with the number of mutants Jaden was able to sense at the entrance exams.
"I sent a list of the students I sensed to Chancellor Sheppard and those students will have a special schedule to train their powers. The problem is where we're going to train, because after a certain incident involving a sudden typhoon, the gym is out of the question." That last part, Jaden shot a glare at a certain two cousins who tried to look innocent.
"Don't worry it's been taken care of," Ares reassured. "My dad and Shadow's dad had a special training center made into one of the sub-levels, complete with a danger room, weapons vault, and cerebro."
"All right," Jaden approved. "Well, that's all that we needed to cleared up, so I say we all head home and hit the hay."
That was agreed upon by everyone. So, everyone grabbed their bags and headed home, excited for the big day tomorrow.
It is done. It took a few days but it was worth.
