Writing Prompt 5: Choose a favorite story, and then write a letter where one of the correspondents is a secondary character, have them describe the main events of the story from their viewpoint.

Dear Mother,

I do hope you get this letter; I paid a traveler a good amount of money to take it to the Shire.

Has it really been nine months? I can hardly believe it. I know what you must be thinking, I had been spending far too much time with a Took, and now I'm corrupted into wanting to go on adventures, see the world, and hopefully- not get trampled by one of the big folk in the process (This being something that has nearly happened quite often)

I know you're probably upset that I haven't come back yet, and I'm terribly sorry about that. I miss home dearly sometimes.

You probably want to know why exactly I left. I regret to say that- and I predict that you're rolling your eyes right now- this adventure is really quite important, and saying even the smallest thing can take away all that we've worked for. However, I will tell you this, that I am perfectly safe and under no circumstances have I been captured by orcs, gotten lost in a dreary forest, or taken out a large military base in the east. I've done absolutely none of that, and whoever tells you otherwise is lying.

How's Pa? How's the garden? Is Hamfast taking it well that Sam left? Please tell me Rosie isn't married yet- he'd be so entirely heart broken.

I doubt that you'll be able to answer my questions, as I'll be moving from place to place quite a bit in the next few months.

There are dark things coming, things I can't explain, and if I could, I'm not sure I'd want to.

Be sure to avoid farmer Maggot at all costs- that is- if he hasn't come looking for payment of his missing carrots by now. I'm not sure what's going to happen to me Ma. Oh and please do remember to plant the pumpkins this year; I'd love to have some when I get back. I'm so scared and so lonely. How was the spring festival? Gandalf took Pip away a long time ago. Did you finish that dress you were making? It sure did look lovely. I'm so afraid for him. I'm afraid for me. Mr. Bilbo informed us at Rivendell that he would quite like it if someone were to keep the Sackville Bagginses from taking his spoons while he's away. I don't know what's going to happen next, I don't want to know. Do you think you could keep people from pillaging Bag End this time? We're going to the aid of Gondor. We sent Bill the pony back some time ago, did he ever arrive? We're going to war.

With the simplest love,

Meriadoc Brandybuck
