The Law of Roses
A kiss on the cheek for a daisy; that was their law. Mori liked flowers.
It had become a daily routine; on Ueki's way to school there was a young boy that stood on a street corner selling daisies for fifty yen apiece. Ueki would continue on his way to school after making his purchase, where she was waiting for him. By the gate they would hide away on the side opposite of the school, and she would stand on the tips of her toes to reach his cheek. Then he would hand her the daisy.
It was normal; it was routine. She had gotten used to it.
So when Ueki approached her with a rose and a serious face, she was at a loss for words. When he pointed to his lips and said, "Here for a rose," she could only stare.
"Huh?"
"Here," he tapped his lips, "for a rose."
Blood rushed to her face. She raked a hand through her tousled hair. "Wh… why the sudden change, Ueki?"
"Well," he said, scratching his chin, "the daisy vendor wasn't selling daisies today. He had roses instead, which cost five-hundred yen instead of fifty. So I thought long and hard about what kiss would equal five-hundred yen." He stuck lips out in an 'o'. "I think here will do."
Mori rubbed the back of her neck, blushing. "Are you sure?"
"Sure as a five-hundred yen piece," he replied, handing her the rose before pulling her closer by the waist. She rose shakily to her tiptoes, and…
