"Dean?"
"Yeah?" his brother spares him a glance, and Sam shakes his head lightly, he'd been knocking this subject around his head for the last half hour, and he still wasn't entirely sure how to broach it.
"Sam, what is it?" "You're not gonna propose are you?"
And of course his brother wasn't going to make it any easier.
"Dean-"
"'Cause the baby isn't yours."
"Dean will you-…wait you cheated?"
"Woman's got needs."
"You know what I find fascinating? Is how you're the woman in this scenario."
"Shut up."
"Dean."
"Yeah alright. I'm listening."
Sam let his tongue flick out over his lips, teeth sinking down into the bottom one as he pushed his hand back through his hair.
"If you pull out a little box I-" Dean stopped, Sam watching as his brother swallowed hard, the little hunk of gold catching the light from a passing car making it gleam.
"I couldn't just leave it. And you can make fun of me but I…when you…when I…" he sighed, shaking his head, "when I first gave this to you I don't think I could ever have known exactly what it meant, but when you threw it out-"
"Sam-"
"No, let me finish. When you threw it out, when you just let it drop…I'm not gonna lie, that stung a little more than I'd care to admit. But I got it out of there, because I knew. Because I believe in you Dean. You're all I ever believed in. And that's never gonna change."
Dean took his hand from the wheel, placing it below Sam's outstretched one, letting his fingers curl around the cool metal as Sam lowered it to his open palm, a small smile tugging at his lips, "Dude I hope you know that your man status has officially been revoked."
Sam just rolled his eyes, "Whatever."
Later when they arrived back at Bobby's Dean paused in the doorway, staring down at the pendant in his hand, the pendant he was still holding, that this time he hadn't let go.
"Boy you had better shut that door. Gas ain't cheap."
He chuckled, slipping it over his head, its weight slightly odd against his chest, but still familiar. He couldn't quite place it. But that was okay. And so was he.
