Those eyes are always there; seared into his mind and burned into the back of his eyelids.
Seto works hard throughout the day. His fingers fly across the keyboard almost as though they have a life of their own as he develops and updates systems. Mokuba brings him teas, coffees and things to eat, somehow knowing exactly what to bring. He knows his brother is working hard for both the future of the company and for them but, all the same, he asks Seto why he won't take the rest he so clearly needs.
Because Kaiba Cooperation must continue to be the best, Seto says. Because he must remain on top. Because he must win.
And they both know he isn't referring to the highly competitive games industry.
It's because of that boy.
Or is it?
On the other side of the duel arena, Seto sees a school boy who is long overdue for a growth spurt. And that's with his hair. Yugi is definitely what Seto would call doe-eyed. Even when he frowns his eyes are always large, giving him that look of innocence, which can only be wiped away by the most intense rage when his family or friends have been caught in something bad.
Seto supposes it's Yugi he wishes to defeat. It's him he keeps seeing before him every time they draw cards and place them upon his newly developed holograph arena or Duel Disk. Yet he's not so sure.
Because Seto sees those eyes, right in front of him. The ones he sees every night as he falls into sleep, knowing he will wake up, sweating heavily and tangled within his sheets. For half a second they're there. In front of him. And Seto knows it isn't Yugi but someone else because that gaze fixed upon him is so intense. They hold a determination and a will to fight, just like Yugi's eyes. But there is something different about them and Seto just can't figure out what it is.
It pisses him off so much.
It isn't just the eyes either. Sometimes Seto notices a quick tilt in the hips, which happens so quickly. For the briefest of moments his fingers slide across the cards being held in a way which is challenging. Provoking. What Seto sees the most, apart from the eyes, is the smile. A small smile which flashes so quickly it's missed if Seto blinks. Then that look of fierce determination is back. Seto knows it isn't Yugi's mouth, just like those aren't his eyes. But, no matter how much or fiercely he wonders over it, he is never any closer to even vaguely knowing the answer.
Piecing those quick things together, Seto knows there is confidence of a type which doesn't belong to Yugi. There's invitation, for both duel and attention. But, most of all, there's interest.
Seto can't explain it so he tries to brush it completely aside and forget it. But he can't. Because that look is always there with him, whenever he blinks and whenever he tries to sleep.
Even when it definitely is Yugi before him, Seto could swear the engraving of the eye upon the Millennium Puzzle has a glint to it.
