Eternal Rivals

One man stood atop the Fourth Hokage's statue overlooking Konoha. It was a beautiful night; not a single star to be seen in the sky. The moon hung overhead, illuminating every street and every corner. He hadn't remembered the last time he took a moment to relax and feel the breeze of the cold night air. It was… soothing.

He had never given much thought to the future. Every moment was spent in the now, trying to make the best of what he had. With everything moving so fast, the end of the war and Tsunade's death, he was merely trying to make sense of all the jumbled information wrapped in his head. He wanted to slow down, to take a step back, but he didn't have the luxury of time. He had to make a decision here and now.

"It's for real this time, isn't it Kakashi?" Guy smiled, joining his companion.

Kakashi didn't look back at him. He wasn't sure how to respond. A few years ago, when Tsunade had been in a comatose, Kakashi had readily accepted the title of the Rokudaime Hokage. He believed he was ready. But, after knowing the truth of Obito, knowing that it was his fault for his comrade's dissent into madness, Kakashi couldn't willingly accept the title. Even with all the praise and the accolades, even with the fame Kakashi had gained throughout the five great nations; he simply wasn't ready.

"No," Kakashi replied, looking away in defeat. "I'm going to recommend Shikamaru or Naruto to the council tomorrow morning."

Guy shook his head, taking a seat so that his feet hung over the side of the past Hokage's face. Guy had been formulating a plan inside of his mind. It was terribly convoluted, but, for his friend and greatest rival, Guy would run to the ends of the earth.

"Okay, if that's the case let's have a match!" Guy smiled, jumping to his feet.

"I'm not racing you again…"

"No!" Guy yelled, flailing about in typical fashion. "I'm talking about real hand-to-hand combat; no holds bar ninja battle!"

"And… the catch?"

"This will be our last match ever as Eternal Rivals!"

"Ah… I see. If I win, I take the title of Hokage and you'll become my loyal confidant," Kakashi pondered. "And if you win, we continue to do battle for the rest of our days."

"Quite the opposite!" Guy exclaimed, pointing towards the moon. "You see, we battle until sunrise, each of us using our manliest and youthful combinations until we are both physically fatigued and mentally exhausted. Whoever is left standing will become confidant whilst the other is crowned Hokage!"

As backwards as it seemed, Kakashi understood Guy's logic. Between the two of them, the title of confidant seemed to be the more coveted position. Neither of them particularly craved the caption of Fire Shadow, but wouldn't mind seeing the other with it. Kakashi couldn't help but wonder if the Konoha Council and the Fire Daimyo would actually make Guy the Hokage…

'Then again, they did almost make Danzo Hokage…' the masked man shuddered.

"Then it's settled!?" Guy yelled, screaming towards the sky.

"You're right," Kakashi smiled. "No time like the present."

"Very well…" Guy said, giving Kakashi his typical 'nice guy' pose. "Then I'll use everything in my arsenal to win!"

Guy threw down his arms, screaming towards the sky, releasing a burst of green energy that pushed Kakashi back slightly. He hadn't expected Guy to open the Fifth Gate at the battles onset. Guy had never used them in their matches; Kakashi figured it was only fitting for him to utilize his greatest techniques in their final clash. Kakashi smiled, pulling down his mask so that Guy could see his Sharingan eye.

A battle of the two most powerful shinobi in the land!

The battle for the honor of confidant starts now!
