Belle was curled up, excitedly reading, in one of their living room's overstuffed chairs. She had only the sounds of the mid-Autumn rain and the crackling fireplace to keep her company, as it was Wolves' Time, and her beloved had gone to run. After a long while, the faint patter of feet entered through the dog door in the back, though Belle was far too into her novel to notice. When she heard the whimper at her feet, she let out a small chuckle, marked the page, and looked down. There was Ruby, in full wolf fashion, soaking wet.
"What are you doing, you silly girl?" Belle asked with a smile.
The wolf just walked in a circle in front of her and whined again.
She was used to it by now, this game they seemed to play every month on the full moon. Ruby would go out for her run only to return some indeterminate amount of time later to spend the rest of the evening with Belle. Even in wolf form, Ruby wanted nothing more than Belle's undivided attention.
Ruby stretched out in front of the fireplace, trying to get dry. Belle followed and sat down next to her, much to the wolf's delight. Ruby whined again and Belle laughed, knowing what to do. She reached over and began stroking Ruby just behind the ears, the wolf's favorite place. Almost instantly, her tail started to wag. This went on for a while until Ruby was dry and it was far past midnight. When Belle let out a yawn, the wolf nudged her hand, something Belle learned long ago was Ruby's way of telling her to go to bed. Belle reluctantly got up, hating to leave but also knowing that sleep was approaching quickly. She said her goodnights as always and headed to her bed while the wolf kept on doing whatever things wolves do at night.
Too early the next morning, Belle woke up to the sound of her very frustrated, very human girlfriend's groans.
"What's the matter?" she asked the woman walking into the room.
"I did it again," Ruby replied with a frown. She held up the object in her hand and Belle couldn't help but laugh, which only made Ruby pout more.
"Oh Sweetheart," Belle said, "I can't believe you've done it again!"
"I know, that was my favorite pair of shoes!"
Defeated, Ruby threw the half chewed up shoe onto the floor and climbed into the bed.
"My stomach is going to hurt later," Ruby moaned, "besides the shoes, I think I remember Henry slipping me too many treats."
Belle snuggled up closer before she remarked, "He probably did. His mothers love Wolves' Time, it's the only time of the month he doesn't ask for a puppy."
"Ha ha, Belle," Ruby sarcastically replied, "someone's got a sense of humor."
Belle only smiled widely before she said, "Go to sleep, Ruby, you've had a long night."
Ruby said nothing and kissed Belle on the forehead before closing her eyes. Slowly, quietly, peacefully, and together, they both drifted away.
