The usual SakuSasu (the actual kind- the sad kind)

-Only Hope-

"I...I can't." She whispers sadly. Each word dripping in her faith.

"Why?" he asks. Such a simple question.

Such a complicated simple question.

She fails to respond, eyes downcast.

"Why can't you stop loving me?" he repeats, dryly and with a hint of malice. She looks up at him, eyes on the brink of tears and glances away a moment after, and speaks slowly.

"I just can't." She says with a little more confidence than her last sentence.

"Why?" Again he inquires. He has to know why she could fall in love with him; what in the world made her believe that he could ever love her back? "I can't love you back, you know."

He spoke so casully, like he was talking about anything but matters of the heart. The sky is blue, the grass is green, the ocean is deep, you know I'll never love you.

"I know," she says wistfully.

"Then why?" He asks. The same horrible, beautiful question. "Why do you persist?"

"A girl can hope, can't she?" she finally gathers courage to look him in the eye.

"You don't deserve me, don't be selfish."

"I know," again said wistfully, in a sorrowful way. "I don't deserve someone like you." she said, eyes again staring into the ground, refering to how great he was and how pititul she was.

After a moment of silence, he said off-handedly "You deserve better," and began to walk away.

She whispered his name and he stopped and waited for her to speak.

"I love you." She said and he knew she did, and she always will. Her hope would never leave her. She was Hope itself.

And secretly, he wished he could love her with such abandon, to make her happy, to maybe feel happy himself. But it could never be. They both knew that. It was pitiful and sorrowful and painful and hopeless, they both knew that.

But she continued to hope.

"I love you...so much...that it hurts," she confessed to his still figure.

He turned his head to glance at her and saw her smile sadly.

"I know." He said, and walked away.
