A Sunset Talk
Celestia and Luna talk
Celestia smiled as she watched her subjects. Her smile faded as her thoughts turned to her sister. A thousand years in isolation had not been good on her sister's already debatable sanity.
Nightmare Moon had merely been the manifestation of that insanity getting loose. She doubted Luna would be able to keep the dark alicorn in check, should it try to take over. The Elements of Harmony had bound the creature away.
"What's wrong, sister?" Luna trotted in.
"Nothing, Luna." Her smile returned. "I was wondering when you would get here."
Luna said nothing as she raised the moon. "The shadow's still there." She commented on the marking that had appeared at the time of her banishment.
Celestia stared at the white orb. "I would've thought that it would've disappeared or that you would've taken it away."
"No, I like it." Luna said. "Probably the only think I like about my banishment."
"I'm sorry." Celestia said.
Luna said nothing in return. "No you're not." Luna said.
"Don't listen to it." Celestia warned.
Luna laughed. "Nightmare Moon hasn't spoken to me since Twilight Sparkle and her friends defeated her." She looked down. "You never noticed how lonely I was. Even when you did have the energy to talk to me at the end of the day, you didn't."
Celestia looked away.
"By the time Nightmare Moon took control, I was truly considering killing myself." Luna said. "I wanted to know if anyone would ca-notice if I tried." Luna pawed the balcony. "Nightmare Moon wouldn't let me."
"I-I di-didn't know." Celestia stuttered.
"Like I said, you barely noticed me by that time." She said. "You were too busy. I did understand why but it still hurt. I'm better now, people love the night."
"I didn't know people stargazed."
Luna laughed. "I'm not completely naïve, sister." She smiled. "I don't mind that people don't look on my sky, they still enjoy the night."
Celestia frowned as she tried to think of what her sister meant.
Luna tried to not laugh at her sister's expression. "Night clubs, Celestia."
Celestia's expression was priceless.
Luna burst out laughing.
"I can't believe you, Luna!"
"It is a simple spell to disguise my coat and mane, make up for my cutie mark." Luna said.
"It is degrading fo-" Celestia said.
"It is easier for me to learn about modern times if I'm among ponies." Luna continued.
Celestia sighed. "Luna, please."
"Celly, I do know what is right and wrong." Luna said. "I'm not a little filly anymore."
"I just worry about you."
"Nightmare Moon is locked away." Luna said. "I can handle her. I did for centuries before she tried to take over and make night unending."
Celestia stared. "Centuries?"
"She kept me company on the longer nights." Luna said. "I didn't think she would do what she did."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Would you have done anything?" Luna countered. "By that time you had enough on your plate then to worry about me."
"I should have." Celestia looked away.
"Go to bed, sister." Luna said. "I'm fine."
"Luna, don't do anything stupid."
"I only go out on the weekends. There are so many more ponies to learn from." Luna said as Celestia walked away.
Celestia was nearly asleep when she registered he sister's words.
See? We can write non-evil!Celestia!
I can't remember where, but there is a fanfic/art where Luna discovers nightclubs.
I think she is willing to take what she can.
As to the mare in the moon thing, well, we think it's pretty.
Celestia, as many have pointed out, seems to have been the one who takes care of business. So she would be tired and wanting to go to bed after the day is done.
