Sugar Cookies and Eggnog

Zay paused the movie playing on the TV in the living room he shared with his roommate Farkle and unofficial roommate Smackle—who might as well admit she lived with them.

He watched them as things got heated between them as they argued. Farkle clenching his jaw, Smackle's nose twitching.

"But wasn't Jesus born in April according to the bible?" Smackle's words flew out of her mouth, her eye brow raised as Farkle put his hands up.

"That's what you two are fighting about?" Zay huffed as he picked up his mug and stormed off to the kitchen, "All I wanted to do was watch this movie, and you two start bickering when Christ was born!"

Smackle and Farkle looked to each other and then Zay, "But wouldn't you rather watch this movie in April, closer to when Christ was born?"

"No!" Zay growled as he threw open a cabinet, "It's December, I want to watch Christmas movies in December when Christmas is!"

"But he was born in April." Farkle reminded his friend as if that solved some issue.

"We celebrate his birth in December though, and I'm watching a movie about a woman who finds out the sweet stranger she met when she hit him with her bike is really Santa Claus! The two of you are making this way more complicated than it needs to be."

Farkle studied Zay has he began to take items out of the cabinets and lined them up on the counter. He buzzed around the kitchen as Farkle leaned over to Smackle, "I think we broke Zay."

"I think he's stress baking, I've seen Riley do this before, remember how she was always giving away cookies when Lucas first deployed?" Smackle reminded her fiancé.

Farkle nodded, "Hey Buddy, we're sorry if we upset you. We got carried away."

Zay waved a rolling pin at his roommate, "Yeah, well if you're really sorry you'll let me watch this movie without anymore debate about when we should celebrate. A guy just wants to kick back, and watch Danica fall in love with Paul for the like fifth time."

"We promise, not another word from us about it." Smackle nudged Farkle hoping he would confirm.

"Not another word." Farkle agreed as he watched Zay shaking colored sugar onto the dough and rolling it up.

"Good, cause this needs to chill and when the movie is over I'm baking them up." He wrapped the roll in plastic wrap before looking up, "If you guys behave you can have one when they're baked."

"We'll behave, we promise." Farkle smiled to Smackle before going back into the living room, with Zay following behind.

Zay sat back on the couch, stretched a little before picking up the remote and pressing play. Watching as his favorite Hallmark Queen fell in love with Santa.

Farkle and Smackle were silent, not bickering at all or pointing out how ridiculous it was for this Ad Executive to fall in love with Santa.

When the movie ended Zay hopped up and dashed into the kitchen, preheating the oven as he took the dough out and cut the cookies, placing them on the baking sheet.

The oven beeped that it was ready just as Zay was finishing lining the cookies up on the sheets. He slid the cookies in and quickly began to clean up the mess he'd left while watching the movie and setting up to cool the cookies.

When the timer went off he slipped on his oven mitts and took them out, letting them cool just long enough on the sheet before transferring them to the racks.

Zay went to the fridge, taking out the carton of Eggnog he'd gotten earlier that day and poured three glasses and then set a cookie out for each of them, "Dig in."

Smackle took a bite, savoring the sweet flavor before washing it down with the creamy beverage. "You know what, these totally wouldn't work in April, December is the right month for Christmas."

"I knew you'd come around." Zay smirked before sipping his own eggnog.
