Leni's Xmas Challenge: Spike and Dawn in the summer Buffy was dead

Quietude

by Red Wolf

Dawn sat on the front steps with her arms around her knees. She watched Spike watering the garden in the moonlight, moving from plant to plant, hose in hand.

She'd asked why he didn't use the watering system and he'd said that he liked the time of night between people settling down for the evening and the monsters rising.

Dawn has a suspicion that he enjoyed the simple domesticity of the task. That he felt like he was contributing to her care.

She smiled to herself. Spike didn't need to prove anything; he'd always held a piece of her heart.
