"I may have accidentally sort of adopted five cats."

First Fanfiction since I was 13. Hope it's good

"Maka..."

"What's that?"

"I may have accidentally sort of adopted five cats."

"... You did what?"

Maka was being bitchy. She was bitchy a lot lately. Stress, that's all it was really. Exams were coming up, and Maka always freaked out badly when it came to exams. She really shouldn't, she'd be fine. That never seemed to get through her thick head though.

Whatever, at least he had a chance go get out of the house. She's been complaining that they didn't have any decent food so Soul took it upon himself to go pick up something to eat. Something simple.

He was just a block from the store when he noticed the box. He didn't need soul perception to know there was something in it. He crept up to it when the box mewled. Soul stepped back and blinked. How stereotypical. A box of kittens on the side of the road. It really wasn't cool to leave them there.

He hefted the box up and continued down the street.

Maka was going to kill him. He'd neglected to think about what she would say. He'd picked up food and dishes for the kittens, not even giving a second thought to how Maka would react, and despite having lived together for years, he really did not know what to expect. They'd never talked about getting any sort of pet. It was too late now though because he was already through the apartment door, food and pets precariously balanced in his arms.

He swallowed before calling out her name. "Maka..."

She swung her door open before stopping mid motion, evaluating the box in his arms. "What's that?"

He looked down slowly, then back up. He couldn't gauge her reaction yet. "I may have accidentally sort of adopted five cats."

She blinked. It took her several moments to speak. "...You did what?"

He set the box down as she walked over and peaked inside. Five cats laid curled up in the box. They were actually a little cute, if not scrawny and starved. She looked up at him, expression unreadable.

"Soul..."

"Tyrion!"

Soul looked up as the runt of the litter, a small orange cat, flew from Maka's room, tail puffed up. For his size he was the biggest pest of them all. She'd wasted no time in naming them. Hermione, Will, Tuck, Turtle, and Tyrion. All named after book characters, not by his choosing.

He was admittedly glad though. She's actually taken to them very well. She'd immediately scooped them out of the box and placed them near the heater to calm their shaking and brought them food and water. She yelled at Soul to get a blanket or two from the closet, which he ran to do. He made a little bed for them on the floor in his room, near the vent. They'd interupt her studying, so Maka insisted they sleep there, not that Soul minded.

Once they had been fed and Maka was assured they'd be fine, they carried them into Soul's room and laid them on the bundled blankets, where they immediately curled up and slept.

Soul himself ate then withdrew to his room, more to lay a protective eye over the kittens than anything. Maka sneaked into his room several times through the night while Soul pretended not to notice. She'd pet the kittens, assure herself they were fine, and leave again. She was clearly more thrilled than he was. Despite his initial surprise, he decided it did make sense. She had some about of fondness for animals.

Tyrion came to a flying halt right before crashing headfirst into the counter before flying off under some piece of furniture. Cats seemed to suit the place just fine.
