A/N: My first attempt at Jaylee! It's kind of Pre-Jaylee, so it isn't great... (But, hey! I'm a Rayne shipper!)

Kaylee's folks had always told her to enjoy life, so they hadn't pitched a fuss when she told 'em she was headed out to the black in an old Firefly, 'cuz they knew she'd be happy. And she sure was happy. Never been happier. She'd been on Serenity for a good long while now, and she'd never come to regret it.

Kaylee took her parents' lesson to heart. She tried her best to enjoy the little things. She liked animals, sunshine, strawberries, and engines. But Kaylee really loved a good romp in the sheets, no matter what other folk thought of it. That's why she and 'Nara got on so well. They shared similar ideas about it. Sex didn't have to be shameful, lovey, or even private. It was just two folk wanting to share time. Scratch an itch.

The first time they were planetside since she'd joined the crew, she'd run for the bar, hopin' to find a boy willing to help her out. Problem was, the bar had its own whores. And no man would give her attention, free or not, with a beautiful working woman nearby. So, Kaylee had dejectedly headed back to Serenity, her new battery-operated purchase in hand. It wasn't as good as the real thing, but it looked as if it would have to do.

She was sittin' at the galley table, attempting to put the batteries in the toy, when Jayne walked in. His jaw dropped. "Is that a...?"

Kaylee nodded without looking up. "None of the boys at the bar showed any interest. Here," she said, handing him the pack of batteries. "Open this. I can't seem to pry it open." Jayne did so and handed it back to her. "Thanks."

He nodded. "No problem. Why didn'tcha just get a whore? S'what I do."

She looked up at him. "Ya mean a boy whore?" He looked confused as why to she hadn't done just that. Kaylee had given it some thought, but not all of them serviced girlfolk, and she didn't wanna offend nobody.

"Well, yeah." He scratched at his stubble idly. "S'just scratchin' a itch."

Kaylee's felt her face break out into a grin. "I think so, too! Some folk back on my homeworld didn't like it too much, though." She had been called rude names, and some real jerks had come on to her. But, Kaylee only slept with people who were nice to her. She wasn't what those people said.

"Aw, hell," Jayne said as he sat beside her. "Don't pay no mind ta them hun dans. Just stick by yer friends."

She smiled. "We're friends?" Jayne wasn't real social, and he never really talked to her.

"Well, sure." He shrugged. "We's crew an' all." He gave her a weak smile before picking up her new toy and rolling it over his fingers. "So do these things really do good by ya?"

Kaylee shrugged. She had a similar one back home and it'd been alright. "Not as good as the real thing, but it'll get the job done."

Jayne leered down at her. It didn't make her as uncomfortable as she thought it would have. "Well ya know, Little Kaylee, ya ain't gotta settle fer batteries. Not if ya don't wanna." He became serious. "Just can't go gettin' all 'motional-like. Like I said, just-"

"Scratching an itch," Kaylee finished for him.

Their first time had been rough and wild, but over time, the erratic sex had given way to tender touches and soft kisses. Kaylee loved Jayne's kisses. They were the perfect mix between brutal and sweet. But, despite all that, it was still only about the sex. That was what they had both wanted.

But now, in the bridge, under the console, tryin' to undo the damage done by the Cap'n's faux bride, Saffron, Kaylee had to wonder. "That's why I don't kiss 'em on the mouth." She had to wonder if Jayne's distaste of Simon wasn't a bit of jealousy.
