prologue
Long ago, when humans were but the most insignificant beings that crawled around, two beings of unspeakable power walked this planet, but they were as different from each other as could be.
She representated life, creation, light, peace and everything else we are thankful for.
He representated death, destruction, darkness, war and everything else we curse.
They had a great many names; some call them Ying and Yang, and some refer to them as day and night. But their most common names, which we still use nowadays, are kami* for her, and Devil or juubi* for him.
Unlikely as it may seem, and as it indeed was, they fell in love, and lived happily for a long time.
Together, they had nine children.
But it couldn't last. As Kami started to spend more time with her children, trying to keep them from becoming like their father, whom she loved nonetheless, the juubi grew more and more suspiscious. Knowing that he could attack his own children, Kami send them to furthest corners of the earth and hid them to the best of her abilities. And as she had expected, the Juubi searched for them. He searched far and wide, destroying everything in his way. As Kami watched her former lover rampage throughout the land, she decided it was time to act.
Afraid of not being able to fight her husband, Kami bestowed a blessing on an small boy, whose parents had been killed in the juubi's rampage, giving him the power to control the flow of energy every being posseses. The boy matured into a man, while being trained by one of the most powerful beings ever to have existed.
At the age of 20, the man, known to the world as the sage of the six paths, began his hunt for the juubi.
When he finally found him, five years after he had left, they fought, and it was a battle of the likes the world had never seen before, and, for her own good, should never see again.
Eventually, the Sage of the six paths managed to defeat the juubi, by sealing it's soul and energy into his own body. Using part of the juubi's own energy, he shot the body into the sky, and entombed it in rock, creating the moon in the process.
However, the of demonic energy the Juubi had possessed was not compatible with the sage's body, thus killing him from the inside.
To save him, Kami called upon her sons and daughters, and asked them to each absorb a portion of the energy, seeing as how they, being conceived by the very same energy, would be impervious to it.
And so it happened. Each of the nine children absorbed a portion of the energy, the amount depending on the compatibility of the the children. From that day on, they were known as 'The tailed demons.'
The tailed demons, or 'Bijuu' continued to roam the earth to their own desire, going where ever they pleased.
The sage of the six paths taught the humans how to control their energy flow, now known as 'Chakra', and lived a long healty live with his wife and two sons.
Kami herself ascended into the heavens, and was never heard from again, save for the times her children visited her.
The juubi remained entombed in the moon, despite the attempts at resurrection every several centuries.
That is the legacy upon which our ninja world has been established.
