Well, my friend gave me a challenge to write a fic with the prompt 'blood' (Yeah, I know, my friend's odd). Anyway, I figured that Moonlight was as good a show as any to write a blood oneshot, for obvious reasons.
This is pre-series, just so's ya know.
Anyway, this is my first Moonlight fic, please be kind! It's not very good, but hopefully you'll like it.
I own nothing. (damnit)

Most people think being a vampire means cloaks and castles, turning into a bat and crumbling when sunlight touches us. They conjure up images of Dracula's cowering in shadows, sucking the blood of innocent maidens. If only they knew.
We live among them, even here in LA. In hundred degree heat and almost constant sunshine. The humans blissfully aware that their friend, their neighbour, their colleague, their boss, their teacher could be one of us.
There is one thing they got right though. Drinking blood. The thing about vampires is, when we're turned, our red blood cells lose the ability to carry oxygen. We need living blood to carry oxygen to our brain, or we die. Simple as that. If we don't get enough, then we suffocate. Slowly, and painfully. Not a pleasant death.
So, there you have it. The business side of why we drink blood.
But there's another side. Drinking blood really is mixing business with pleasure.

It's Friday. To Josef, Friday means party. Music isn't so much as blaring out of his expensive speaker system as it is filling the room, eliminating every cubic inch of silence in the whole party. There are drink trays everywhere, tall champagne flutes filled with thick red liquid. Wine, to the untrained eye, but I can smell it. It soaks into every pore, irresistible, calling to me. It's like an alcoholic with a rare vintage. No. It's like a heroin addict with that first hit of the day.
I sip at my drink, closing my eyes as the liquid drips down my throat. Before I realise, I've drained my glass. Across the room I see Josef, wrapping around a striking blonde. His eyes are animalistic as he sinks his teeth slowly into her neck. Her eyelids flutter in ecstasy and he suckles gently at her collarbone, where hot blood pulses thickly.

You see, what most people don't realise is while we lack working red blood cells, vampire saliva contains a very important component. Vampire saliva releases endorphins into the human bloodstream and, in turn, the blood gives us a buzz to rival any street drug, legal or otherwise .It starts in your stomach, like drinking liquid heat, and it spreads outwards, a blossoming flower of heat and blood and sex.
--
You can watch the moment that blood kicks in, my normally suave and cool friend loses control, just that little bit, and his breath comes in pants, reaching euphoria. They sag bonelessly, spent. I place my glass somewhere and leave as my cellphone buzzes. I have a job to do. Dinner will have to wait.
The thing about vampires, a dinner party is murder.
The thing about vampires, we're all just nymphomaniacs with excuses. But good excuses.

OK, that ending sucks ass. But I needed this finished, so, whaddya gonna do? Review! Please?
I may or may not have more Moonlight fics in the works, but mainly I need to see the rest of the series before I do anything.
