Soft strains of Chopin filled the air, and the candles glowed dimly at the tables. They walked into the restaurant arm in arm, as most couples would, the hostess immediately greeted them and checked off their reservation. The woman was dolled up quite nicely, with smoky eyes and pale, glossy lips, and an elegant black dress that was gathered in at the waist. Her male companion wore a white dress shirt tucked into khaki trousers, topped off with a sharp navy jacket. They were led to their table by a waiter, eager to impress the woman with his boyish charm. Only one who was paying close attention could have noticed the way the man became a little more protective; a little bit more possessive of the woman.
They took their time in eating, savouring the fine food. Even after they were finished, they lingered quite a bit longer, clearly enjoying each other's company. The woman had a look of utter contentment on her face, and the man's eyes were completely fixated on her, as if he couldn't afford to miss anything she said. Just then, she leaned forward on her elbow, grinning flirtatiously at him. If one listened close enough, bits and bobs of their hushed, somewhat intimate conversation could be heard.
"I've always wondered what it would be like to come here with you on Christmas eve." He mused softly, not wanting to break the serene stillness of the mood.
The lady glanced around, taking in the classy yet festive ambience, and then gazed back at her partner. She said, "It's lovely Harry...You must have booked a reservation months in advance."
They each took sips of champagne from their glasses. Just then it began to snow outside, soft drops of ice falling to the ground.
The woman looked down at her napkin, fingers plucking at the cloth. He placed a hand over hers and stilled her movements. All of a sudden, the woman seemed to have renewed her sense of confidence.
She spoke again, " Marry me. I want you in my bed in the mornings." The man appeared taken aback by her straight-forwardness, so it took him a moment to recover. He smiled gently at her, caressing each finger lovingly.
"You know I'll already be there, Ruth... You forget I've been married before. It wasn't such a good idea." This did nothing to sway her, she only smirked at him, determined to have her way.
"It would make a lovely Christmas gift. Also, It would be nice to know that you're legally required to be there." The man brought her hand to his lips for a kiss. After, he asked with a twinkle in his eyes, "When shall we set the date?"
