Don't Disappear
'I can't see you yet...
Are you really even there?'
The time was late summer, and for once the ground was free of snow, though the air still stung cold.
Six year-old Kai Hiwatari stood at the top of a hill, his deep purple eyes roamed the sky as though he might find something there, but the clouds were his only sight.
"Kai?" Eight year-old Tala Ivanov made his way up the hill and looked at his friend with curious eyes, "If Boris finds out that you were here you're gonna be in big trouble." He scolded. "What are you doing anyway?" He asked as he moved to stand beside him.
Kai's eyes flicked to Tala's blue ones then back to the sky, "I'm looking for God." He said bluntly.
Tala frowned, "Kai--"
"Momma said that God lives in the sky," he continued distantly, "and he makes everything turn out right in the end." The wind blew his short gray hair and made it dance to a tune nobody else could hear, "I want to see him. I want to ask him... when he's gonna make us alright. But..." He trailed off.
"'But' what?"
"Is this the same sky that it was back then? The same in Russia as it was in Japan? ...Is there a God in Russia, Tala?"
"..." Tala didn't answer at first, "'God makes everything turn out right'...? That's a stupid mindset, Kai." He looked angrily at Kai, "We gotta make everything 'turn out right' for ourselves! No 'God' is gonna help us! There is no God in this place! There can't be! God wouldn't let us not have parents! God would've kept them alive!"
"Momma thought there was..." Kai said quietly.
"You don't know anything! You're just a stupid little kid!" Kai flinched from his remark and he instantly felt bad, "Kai... I'm sorry. I shouldn't belittle your mother's beliefs." He paused, "Maybe... Maybe you're right."
Kai looked at him in confusion.
"Maybe... Maybe God used to be here... Before..."
"Yeah..." Kai breathed, "Maybe God just disappeared."
"...'Disappeared'?"
"Like Nana and Momma-and-Papa," Kai answered sadly, "They all disappeared..."
Tala didn't know what to say, he never knew either of his parents so he couldn't really know how Kai felt when he thought about them. He couldn't miss what he never had. But he still felt the need to console Kai somehow, so he reached out his hand to place it on his shoulder.
"Kai..." he took a step toward him, but his foot rolled at an odd angle and he was sent rolling down the hill.
"Tala!" Kai exclaimed, and raced after him.
Tala reached the bottom of the hill and was brought to a painful halt when he rolled into a large tree.
"Guh..." He groaned. He started to lift his head then dropped it with a 'thud' and lay there.
"Tala!" Kai yelled as he reached him, "Tala, are you okay!?" He dropped to his knees beside him and shook his shoulder, "Tala!? Tala!"
"Easy, Kai, easy. I'm okay." He smiled forcedly and heaved himself upright.
"Tala..." Tala was surprised to see Kai's eyes filling with tears. Suddenly, Kai threw himself at him and hugged him tightly, burying his head into his chest as he sobbed.
Tala was surprised, but hugged him back.
A lifelong friendship was formed on that day, with only two simple words:
"Don't disappear, Tala! Don't disappear!"
A soft snow began to fall, the first snow of winter, and they knew that as long as they had each other, God or no God, they would make things turn out right.
