The sky was still a slate gray. The whipping wind was still tinged with an unnatural chill. The waves still crashed menacingly against the rock. The only thing that had truly changed with Isobel's fall had been her assailant. Black eyes impossibly wide, Varen Nethers gaped at the rolling waves below him. Had he just pushed his girlfriend off a cliff?

Oh, this was going to be a hard one to talk himself out of.

She could probably use a hand right about now. Varen continued to stare open-mouthed at the surf. Lilith giggled from the balcony she was perched on.

"Nice going, Casanova," she snickered. Before Varen could formulate an appropriately scathing reply, another unwelcome face marched forward.

"Did you just throw her off of a goddamn CLIFF?!" The fact that Reynolds was shrieking at him was more frightening than the demonic snickers coming from Lilith. Which had increased in volume. "Are you serious?! She worked her ass off to get over here, and you show your gratitude by pitching her into the surf? What the fuck is wrong with you?!"

"It was a misunderstanding! She… she said mean things about me!" Varen's excuses fell on deaf ears, however, as Reynolds stormed down the side of the rock to go retrieve Isobel's still body. Varen couldn't make out his heated mutters, but had a feeling that they included many eighteenth century curses. He shrank into himself as Reynolds yanked Isobel onto his shoulder and shot Varen a poisonous look before disappearing, feeling utterly miserable.

Lilith joined Varen on the rock structure, making it a point to stay several feet away.

"Forgive me if I don't trust your self-restraint," she quipped.

"You have bird feet," Varen snapped back sourly. Lilith looked at her talons self-consciously, then glared at the Goth from behind her veil. When it became clear that he wasn't going to apologize, Lilith turned talon and stomped off, her mass amounts of white fabric swirling around her dramatically. Varen rolled his eyes. Great. Now to find a way to grovel for forgiveness.

A/N: I am well aware that this was super short, totally pointless, and very OOC. That was totally my intention. This was my way of making myself feel better after Varen, you know, pushed his girlfriend off of a CLIFF. I was in full rage mode, as I hope many of you were. I'd love to hear your reactions to both the book and the story!
