In the end, Nico di Angelo knew that he was never going to be a hero. No matter what he did, his past and parentage haunted him and made him hated by everyone. They would never think of the young boy as anything more than a emo teenager.
That is why when he lay in a pool of blood, dying, he knew that he was soon going to be forgotten. As soon as his last breath left his body he would no longer exist. There will be no memory of him.
The sight of his own blood made him dizzy. He wondered if this was what Bianca and his mother felt like when they knew they were going to die. Complete helplessness. No way out. No hope.
He thought of Percy, the only one that he loved, yet didn't love him back. He wasted his whole life running from that truth. Now, he wished that he would have told them, faced the facts. He knew now that if he had told them then he would have been excepted, maybe even loved.
Now, in his time of dying, it was too late. Everybody runs out of time, eventually. His just ran out too early.
His last breath escaped his body, then it went limp. The son of Hades was gone, never to be seen again. No one ever found the body. No one knew he was dead. Nico di Angelo, the only son of Hades, was soon forgotten to exist.
