Several things to know

1) It's AU as I have stated in the summery because

-Lily is still alive

-Collin is only 18 months old

-Mary is the oldest child of Lily and Archibald Craven

2) I don't own any of the orginal characters

3) HermioneLennon was the one that inspired this story

Mary knew that as per the rules of the manor house she was not supposed to go in the water without an adult around but Collin, her baby brother who was just starting to walk was walking too close to the pool and fell in. The baby sitter was distracted and wondered off in the other direction. Mary saw what had happened to Collin and without even thinking dived in the pool. She would worry about the consequences later if need be. The water was freezing and she shivered through her clothes.

She held her breath as she went under the first time. She didn't feel him. She dived in a second time and then a third. This time she grabbed him and pulled him up. Then she sat terrified holding him not sure of what to do.

Thank goodness Neville, her father's brother happened by at the time.

"Mary what happened," he said gently, grabbing Collin and pumping the water out of him, "why are you both, all soaking wet and where did Martha go."

At the last pump Collin threw up all the water. Neville rubbed his back for a second then raced them both inside to change Collin's clothes. Once he was warmed, dry changed and comfortably resting Mary told her uncle exactly what happened.

"I know I broke the rules," she said, "but I didn't have time to think. He's only 18 months old. He's too young to swim and by the way that water is freezing. I was afraid falling into the pool like that would kill him"

Neville put a hand gently on top of his niece's shoulder.

"You absolutely did the right thing," he told Mary, "sometimes and this is rare but there are times rules are made to be broken. I broke a rule once and I am so glad I did. In the same regard I am so glad that you had the sense to break this rule."

"Did you get in trouble for breaking the rule?"

Neville paused knowing he had to tackle that one carefully.

"No," he said, "and the reason for that is I broke the rule for an emergency situation. I didn't, just like you didn't, break the rules for the purpose of breaking the rules. There are 3 times you don't get in trouble for breaking rules. The first is when you're clever enough not to get caught, but even though you don't get in trouble for it you're often intrinsically punished for it by guilt."

"Intrinsically?"

Neville laughed. He had forgotten Mary was only 4 because she was a bright child.

"It means inside you feel really bad about what you did. Secondly if you broke the rule by accident, like your mom did once, she broke a rule without knowing it existed, you don't get in trouble for it in this house and the third time is if you break the rules in an emergency situation. In all emergency cases all bets are off and you don't have to follow the rules"

Neville told Lily and Archibald what happened when they got back that afternoon. Mary was greatly rewarded and praised for what she did for her brother. Martha was gotten mad at for her irresponsible behavior and let go. They covered up the pool until the kids were a bit older. Everything was alright… for now!
