Hector clutched tightly onto his stuffed giraffe, Jaffy as he huddled in
the small tunnel on the Playscape. There was a thunderstorm that night. The
rain pounded against the roof of the tunnel and thunder crashed in the sky,
accompanied by an occasional flash of lighting. Hector whimpered and hugged
Jaffy to him, wishing his mother could be there to hold him and tell him in
a soft gentle voice to not be scared and that everything was going to be
all right.
He jumped as he heard a loud creak and sat bolt upright, looking wildly out of the tunnel at the dark storm outside. Was something out there? He thought to himself and held Jaffy to him for comfort. He expected a monster to jump out at him any moment and he began to cry.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
A loud clap of thunder sounded almost just above Hector and he let out a terrified cry. Where was his mother now? He wished that she would come back soon. It had been almost a month since she left him at the park, and he had to scavenge around for any food that anyone might have dropped, especially when people had picnics in the park. But it had been rainy all day and no one had come to picnic at the park, so Hector had snatched a banana from a cart outside a shop when no one was looking. That had been in the morning when weather had been somewhat clear, but when it had started to rain, Hector remained confined in the shelter of his tunnel.
Lightning flashed and Hector continued to cry. His stomach rumbled with hunger and he whimpered feebly and rolled over. He looked out of the tunnel at the darkness of the park. After a few minutes, he realized that a glowing pair of eyes were looking right back at him! He yelled and scrambled backwards.
"Meow!"
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
Thunder clapped just as lightning flashed and a little brown kitten let out a startled mew and bounded into the tunnel and onto Hector's lap. He blinked and looked down at the trembling kitten. Its fur was dirty and matted, but its yellow-green eyes seemed to shine from under the dirt and grime. It meowed and rubbed its head against his hand, urging him to pet it. He smiled a little and stroked its back. It purred and arched its back into his hand, enjoying the attention it was being given. It then settled into his lap and yawned sleepily before putting its head down and going to sleep. Hector smiled and settled down to sleep, Jaffy in one arm and the kitten on his lap. He yawned and closed his eyes.
"Goonight Jaffy. Goodnight . . . Brownie." And so they slept, Hector, Jaffy, and the newly named kitten, Brownie. The storm raged on but they soon forgot about their fear of the storm, and as long as they were there together they had no need to be scared. They had each other.
