"Mommy, why does Daddy never smile?"
"Oh honey, he smiles."
"Hardly ever! He just nods."
"He smiles on the inside, baby."
"He smiles at you all the time!"
"Yes, but Daddy knew me for a longer time. It takes a while to make Daddy smile."
"When will Daddy smile at me always?"
"Your Daddy loves you. Just because he doesn't smile all the time doesn't mean he doesn't love you."
"Uncle Iroh and Uncle Sokka and Aunt Toph love me and they smile at me all the time!"
"Yes, but they aren't your Daddy. Your Daddy is special."
"And that's why he got to marry you, right Mommy? Only a special Daddy could marry you."
"That's right."
"Will Daddy ever smile?"
"He's getting there. Remember your Daddy is a very special, very brave man. He loves you very much, but he went through a lot when he was younger, so it sometimes makes it hard for him to smile all the time. That's why, when you do see him smile, it makes it all the more special. Daddy has a very special smile."
"Tomorrow, I'm going to make Daddy smile!"
"All right, sweetie. Now, it's time to sleep."
"Goodnight Mommy. Can you get me some water?"
"Of course."
After she got the requested drink, Katara walked back towards her son's room. In the doorway to the red-draped room she saw her husband standing, looking in. A small, loving smile adorned his face and Katara felt a small, happy surge of warmth in her stomach. She moved to stand by her husband, both of them looking in at their child. With a slight grin given to her spouse, Katara walked into the room and put the glass of water on her son's bedside table. Already asleep, he was dreaming peacefully, not knowing he was the object of more than just her reason for joy. Softly, so her husband couldn't hear, she whispered to the sleeping boy-
"If only you knew how much he smiled at you."
AN: Yeah, so it's not in any way related to 'Watching You' but it's what came to me...I'm not quite sure why. Well, whatever works, right? Reviews are enjoyed.
Disclaimer: I do not own (never will and hope not to--do you have any idea how much pressure that would put on this one poor soul?!) Avatar: The Last Airbender, be it plotline or characters. Avatar: The Last Airbender belongs to Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Nickelodeon Studios, and it's parent company...etc. etc. Profuse thanks for deciding not to sue me.
